Riding your bike faster than the guy in front of you = racing!

That's your definition!

Mine is desperately chasing the wheel in front of you until eventually the elastic slowly stretches, finally ending in the inevitable (and always spectacular) SNAP!

Ok, I am safe. No heart issues for me then......there are always guys in front of me! And girls too.......

I think very few of the older endurance athletes (in their 70s and 80s) have done it at high intensity for a lifetime. Especially in running, those amazing old guys that run ultra distances in their old age often only started doing it in their 50s or 60s. The ones that were hot and fast from a young age have by then destroyed their knees completely. Same with repetitive cycling injuries.

I think the danger zone is somewhere between 40 and 60 when we try to maintain the same level of competitiveness of earlier. That takes more time and hard work.....perhaps leading to overwork? I know my knees and legs need more recovery time that two decades ago! I also know that it takes me longer to build a base and takes longer to peak. The peak can also not be sustained for as long as I could years ago. If it is true of the rest of our body, why not of the heart? The abuse we put it through must certainly leave long term effects. Good as well as bad effects.

As in life, balance is probably the key!

I'm 57 now and realized a couple of months ago that being fit is much less of a guarantee than EATING RIGHT. This was also confirmed by my Homeopath - yes I changed docters  - and I feel much much better nowadays. A cyclist friend of mine who had an "incident" abt a year ago went the normal doctor route - after abt R50k and numerous tests he's on a pacemaker now and have been told never to race again, diet still the same.

Sorry, by mentioning your homeopath you just made everything else you said invalid

bull**** ...docters are oldschool :) :) :)...just joking, we still need them every year to prescribe antibiotics to people coz they don't know what's wrong with them!

Wonder why you never see homeopaths without borders? If you're properly sick go and see a properly qualified doctor.

Hey guys, my point was not about homeopaths, it was about EATING THE RIGHT food and ...plse follow your own heart. It works for me, I'm not here to convince you...but we can open that debate under another topic if you want :)

Go read "Fast after 50 " by Joe Friel the world renown tri /road/ and MTB training coach.

I would rather die going balls to to wall down a narley rockie hill than sitting watching TV re-runs.

P.S.  62 and never felt better, just done 4th Sani2C;  15th Argus and 7 Two Oceans before that.
