32T front and 11-36 ten speed cassette. Loving it. Will replace my 32T with a 34 oval. Kalbo front rings gold only or do they have black ones?

Just check out a few articles before going 34t. I went 34 round to 32 oval. Was advised to do so. Feels perfect!

Bat1, only the gold colour - sorry for the cut and paste:

We believe our wearing parts should last as long as the rest of your drivechain which is why KALBO HILL-KILL sprockets are Class III hard anodised using a specialist process that gives an incredibly hard wearing and dense surface layer as hard as tool steel, so dense in fact that it is nearly impossible to colour. The result is the natural distinctive true hard anodise bronze/gold colour that assures you our components have the hardest aluminium surface treatment possible.

strange - the advice is mostly to go the other way - bigger on the oval side, given that it "feels" as if it's the same as the smaller toothed normal one..

post-16512-0-05389900-1447091501_thumb.pngI went from 34 to 32 and it works for me. Only my dual had a 34t on. My ss and hardtail have 32t on. So maybe that is why I took so well to it.

You surely could just spraypaint the ring black, then the paint will quickly wear off the teeth and look like any other coloured ring...solid colour for the main body with metal colour teeth...

Yeah I went from RaceFace NW 32 to Absolut Black oval 32 with 11-42 at the back...I wouldn't really wanna go 34 oval to be honest, I'd only gain some flat speed and make hills harder...why would you want to make hills harder when you don't need to :P

My local bike mechanic told me to stay away from 1 x conversions as I mostly ride hardpack grondpad marathon type stuff and very seldom go onto a trail.

He said I will loose a lot of topend speed...I dont want to go slower as I am already a bloody tortoise, but then again averaging 30 on a straight and have the gears there to stick it to rolling hills is enough for me. Downhills I dont mind spinning out ...fo obvious reasons.

I would like to shave off some grams off my bike and clean up the bar.

1x10 Conversion is definitely the best thing I have ever done. 32T in front and just added a 40T at  the back. Since the conversion I have 8 friends that have gone the same route. Now the next thing is to try a Oval ring.

Ho much top end speed do you okes want?

Can you seriously Hold 40-45km/hr on a flattich road for 2-3hrs??

Cos if you cant then you really shouldn't be gearing the bike anywhere close to a ratio of 4:1.

Ratio of 3.5 :1 to 3.8 : 1 is pretty good enough.

0.8 :1 on the bottom end is also sufficient. Any slower on the gearing and you're going to be walking. really.

Want to know what all the hype is about ??

Here you go guys..

KALBO Elliptical Z-Rings now available in 34t 104BCD.

Check out the add here.

Can you recommend anybody that can help fit this to my bike here in the Western Cape? I want to order front 32, 16t and 42t but I`m afraid I can`t afford the 80% markup on kalbo rings at my local lbs, compared to ordering directly from kalbo.

Lots of guys ordering in Cape Town and taking it to LBS for fitment - its kind of like getting a new cassette and taking it in to get fitted. You may get charged a "corkage" premium on labour. Maybe someone on this thread can help you out.

Or buy the tools and DIY - its pretty simple and install guides are on our website for download or attached here.
