Dunedin is one of the reasons a lot of Safas think NZ has terrible weather. It is cold in winter, man! And it gets a lot of overcast conditions. And it is full of crazy students doing crazy student stuff.

All that said, it is in NZ and NZ is a fantastic country. When we came over, we would have gone anywhere, even to Invercargill or Greymouth or Westport. We weren't fussy, figured a start anywhere would be better than hanging around waiting to be shot or raped or whatever.

So it's like CT in winter then... :)

From what I understand, even if you're on time, you'll probably have to wait in a queue.

Scheduling your own rape is quicker than getting a lotto ticket on a quiet day....the industry is over employed....you are never wanting or waiting for assistance.....

Ha ha

You wish.It is 11 deg C today and Feb is the hottest month of the year.My mate says you freeze your bollocks off there.

Yes, but the skiing is great. The Otago skifields, Treble Cone and Cardrona in particular, bring back fond memories.

I read that too quickly and wondered how you had managed to get onto the gravy train.

hahaha! no, those guys sadly have access to my bank account.

Speaking of income tax, this might be a handy link for anyone wanting to do the sums...

There's a link on that page to an income tax calculator. In NZ my effective tax works out to 7% less than what it is on the same salary in SA. Score!

Another little helpful bit of info I stumbled upon...

So in NZ levies are added to petrol, but not to diesel. So diesel is significantly cheaper.

BUT, diesel vehicles require a RUC (road user charge) disc to make their contribution. This disc is based on distance travelled. For example, if I do 15 000km/year I will need to buy 15 000km worth of RUC.

The RUC rate is also based on vehicle weight, but the lowest bracket covers up to 3500kg.

So... the NZ government has been kind enough to publish an excel spreadsheet to help one compare 2 vehicles and see which one is cheaper to run.

Look for the link to the spreadsheet here

But housing alone will be at least 3 times higher for me (compared to current)
