Carbon Clinchers braking surface lifespan

Been on Chinese carbon clinchers for a year now, and after going through a set of cork pads, and now on a set of black prince pads, still failing to see any wear manifested on the rims at all.

I am 100kgs and do a fair amount of suburban riding so stop fairly frequently.

Pads wear out quickly, much quicker than on aluminium rims, but braking surface should last until you're bored with the look and want something sexier.

That's what I wanted to know. My pads seem to be disappearing rather quickly!

Swisstop Black Prince is quite durable

I have carbon hoops for training

Try it out if you haven't yet

Or you "start to see really bad wear, if you look really, really, really close" ha ha ha

I recon you could get the braking surface resprayed from time to time as you don't want to wearing it down to the point where you are braking on the actual carbon fibers.

My brake pads also wearing very quickly  down on a set of carbon rims. Not sure if its the braking surface or crappy pads. If it is the bracking surface, I read that it can't be re-coated. Can anyone offer advise on this ?

I have two pairs, Chinese carbons and Campag Bora's.

The Campags are pretty old (like 7 years) and have no signs of wear. Race on them only. The Chinese ones are a year old, and have a little wear on them. I put Mr Min on my wheels and it appears to protect the braking surface from wearing without affecting the stopping power.

I think the fast wearing brake pads are a good thing. As long as the stopping power is there when you brake. Hard pads will surely wear the rim quicker.

As far as it goes with pads, in my own limited experience - cork pads, whether cheap Chinese ones or the nice ones that come standard with branded wheels, wear down super fast. As mentioned above, it's the sacrificial lamb in this scenario. I loved the smell of them melting down a steep descent!

I've switched over to swisstop black prince, which are not cork pads but designed for carbon rims. They have been excellent! Better stopping power, less squealing, and they seem to wear at the same rate as my old shimano blocks on Alu rims.

Try em! You might like em.

Pads for carbon rims are sacrificial. They have to be soft to prevent over heating and wearing the rim brake surface.

What he said.

If you want your pads to last longer, your rims will wear out quicker. A certain amount of friction has to be created to stop you and your carbon wheel shod steed.

There are only two things touching each other during braking, rims and pads. One has got to absorb the energy.

The real solutions disk brakes ;)
