Loads of people cramping on Saturday (including me)

In my case really thought it were those hike-a-bike sessions in the heat that were working muscles not used to suffering as opposed to the actual riding.

Seems this year I must find a nice steep hill at the Tygerberg trails and take my bike for a WALK every now and then!

I know a guy that did running training to prep for those portage and walking segments

He (also) cramped.

Cramping is a mystery hey

Even those who are ultra fit have a cramp day occasionally.

Did the one last year and this was my 2nd one, was a great race again. A must for any MTB'er, but yes it is a tough one.

Started slow pace and just kept my pace right through, eventually started passing a friend who looked... not so good and opened up the fueltank with about 30km's to go. Managed to come in at 7:43 and I was never in trouble, didn't cramped once (learned the hard way to take it easy pace when its hot and portage sections, as well as hydrate the whole time even if your not thirsty)

Great race and will definitely do it again.

Rode my first Atta. The advice of take it easy for the first half as the second half is tough they weren't joking. The waterpoints were fantastic, the Ice cold Coke that was a winner. I rode most of stuff but there were some pretty big hills which i pushed my nobble steed up. Those last 5kms felt like 50kms. Said to myself during the ride i wouldn't ride again, but now i'm keen for the next one. Total time 8:53.

This was my second Attakwas and it won't be my last! It's a tough event but there is something magnetic that just brings you back. Looking forward to next year.

Took all the advice given here. Slow start . Turned out to be slow throughout. Rehidrat in my water etc. If you're a wannabe MTB'er like me nothing can prepare you for this. Far too little training. The big hills I walked, district ones I could ride. Only got of the bike otherwise for one or two river crossings, and a small section between WP 2 and 3. Pleased that I could do the descent into Bonniedale.

The tables were excellent. Piesangbrood and date balls went down well. Those kids in uniform just so helpful.

" En hierdie wit en pienk pille is vir die krampe oom" at WP 3.

Got home in 10.36, but I never felt that I wouldn't make it.

Nice to hear your name on the finish line.

And BSG ,That Pine Creek park is top notch .

Thank you Blokman, yes my inlaws really try their best to keep the place in a good condition. I used to work here as well for two years, helping with managing etc but my truck driver decided to quit his driving job mid November last year. I had to get back on the truck to keep the business running and the wheels turning. I enjoyed it very much working in the park, but I have learned now for the second time that one can never be to trustfull on workers, especially here in our area. I made in December more money being "captain of my ship again" than what he made in six months. But that I guess is the joys of having your own business.

What I like about the event, is that roadies need not apply.... unlike a few other mtbike races.... [emoji14]h34r:

Banna, a friend of mine is a roadie, was supposed to start in F but got moved to E, finished in 6h23m, but he trains like a steam train, very very hard with a rucksack with 8kg of weights inside on every training ride and most of his traing is being done on his roadbike on tar[emoji15] .

So, a question for those who know.

How does Attakwas compare to an Epic stage?

I read on one of the marketing articles (think one here on thehub) it is comparable to a Queen Epic Stage.

Haven't done an Epic myself though so can't vouch for that claim!

Hey thats me in the start block - two riders in front of you on the right. Finished in 10:35:34  ...so we must have had a ball of a time together    (Endangered Wildlife Trust top)

Ditto on the staff at the feeding zones - had fun with the kids in blue school t-shirts - Two of them convinced me to try the caffeine shots for the first time..... "..probeer oom, maar dis SLEG oom " (i think it taste great)

Was a great day: Mission accomplished - finished, with body and bike intact this time. Happy days.

In that case, he's very welcome in the mtb fraternity.

I think it compares well, except in the Epic you should be able to do 4 of them in a row and then there are the other days as well...
