With much sadness I've had to chicken out for my first attempt(loser). After my crash earlier this year and then crashing again causing the same injury I've struggled to get back into the training rhythm. I'll be there in 2017.

if you can ride a 3;00hour Argust then you can ride this one in about 7-8hours depending on the weather

I dont think you can compare it like this???

Argus on a road bike, Atta on a mountain with technical sections!!

I know strong roadies who wont finish atta! Even if it is a mountain biker doing the Argus in 3h

I dont think this is a realistic comparison, however, many may relate to this.

For those who have ridden the Atta a few times on average how many hours per week would you need to do to finish in say 7:30 to 8:00 hours?

I would say rather than just hours also do lots of hill work and some long days offroad in the heat. The hot sun is also a killer at Atta.

I use Dec for some 80/90k long rides with lots of climbs about 300k a week. The main thing at Atta is DO NOT WASTE TIMES AT STOPS.I go pass first water point to number 2 at the tar road. This is where the real Atta starts from here get yourself to the spur stop .A note of warning just before spur is a tricky little decent don't be a hero ride about 3/4 down and walk the last ledges I have found many riders there that fell moertoe and cannot continue.

Do not over train in Dec you must have your basemiles sorted by now.

Just go there and ride the dam thing.

All this comparison vs road vs time is nonsense anyway.

Sign up, train as hard as you can and go and ride it.

He says she says lets all speculate and argue about the future is a bit ridiculous.

Do the hard work now, don't be a pig at Christmas and you will be fine.

If you can't ride 121km at 11kph then eina, you didn't train hard enough.

I agree

The guys who ride around the 9h mark, what is your average pace when you hit 50km? The first half is the more technical half if I understand correctly?

About 4 to 5 hours depending on how hard you go out of the blocks to Spur stop (about 65km - 70km I think). If you go too had, the climbs are a bitch, even of the roads are smooth highways from there to the end.

Go to that Strava links I posted earlier. Scroll trough the leaderboard to a rider with a time you like. Then click on that rider's ride. You can see his pacing over the route. Repeat with a couple to get an idea.

Or just simply ride - check out nature, take photos and enjoy the experience....

Looking forward to this again despite making a complete balls up of this race the past 3 years.

Start too fast, start too slow, arrive on start line sick etc.

The middle section is technical and tough but save some matches for the final stretch.

It's not too bad, a roadie will be fine. One tricky section that you can walk. The first half is tough, good chance you will have a sense of humor failure as you push up some hills!
