Event Name: 2016 Old Mutual JoBerg2c
When: 22 April 2016 - 30 April 2016
Where: Heidelberg, Gauteng
Category: MTB

The Old Mutual joBerg2c is riding the off-roads less travelled and trails never travelled. It is racing, riding and touring across this magnificent country. It is sharing a passion for mountain biking with those who love riding.

From the creators of South Africa’s two favourite mountain bike stage races, the Berg & Bush and Sani2c, comes a ride set to capture the imagination of passionate mountain bikers across the country, if not the world. Starting in the south of Johannesburg and finishing nine days later at Scottburgh on the KwaZulu-Natal coast. Part race part adventure, the Old Mutual joBerg2c takes competitors through the country, from the heat and dust of the big city to the cool crisp air of the sea via spectacular mountainous passes.

I thought was a great experience. It's great to point out on a map where you rode and a lovely way to see parts of the country you usually wouldn't or cant go.

We were lucky this year with good weather, and I had a great partner. The 3 organizers have put a great event together (Sani2C style, but not quite as frenetic).

9 days is a long time to ride a bike and live in a tent, but as long as you have your head around that, its fine.

I am not sure if I would ride it again, because I am scared it wouldn't be as good the 2nd time around. Maybe I will go back in a year or two and see what improvements have been made (they are always busy).

Awesome ride, done it 2012 and 2013

Now you have to pimp your Mrs out with your couch to afford an entry.

Would rather go on a lekker holiday somewhere now, unless the costs were still reasonable Id definitely do it again.

Thanks for the info everyone...ive deceided to enter this event in 2017...hopefully the wife has made enough money to fund the entry fee. 900km over 9 days is pretty daunting. ..so after the Argus i start my training....i just want to enjoy it...and finish it !

I have done it the last 2 years. As rouxtjie said awesome. The people the riders and atmosphere and then to ride 900 km seeing part of the most beautiful parts of our country you will never get to see as normal South Africans. I did it solo with no regrets.

Very sad not to do it next year. Guess I spoiled myself the last two years by only sleeping in the tents the first two nights, where after my wife met me from day 3 and then stayed in BB to the end. Now she said she had enough and I can't see myself and not so young body of mine staying in the tents all the way down. Hopefully my wife will have a rest year next year to recover and then 2017 we go again all fresh and energetic.

And before to many people complain. We also used this time as quality time together.

This is the most incredible event to do. As Doc says, can't underestimate the effort. 45 hours in 9 days on the bike isn't done easily without proper training. But it's the most uplifting event I've ever done. Just kinda resets your compass a bit. 9 days of just focussing on riding your bike from point to point , through the backtracks of the land is cracker. Not a thing to stress about other than riding your bike, and then resting for the next day. Race villages are awesome , and go out of their way to make you comfy. Do it.

What's it got to do with anyone else? I do the same when I race. Its great to be able to race and then have some time with your better half. Just be sure to take a few days extra after the event to really wind down and relax with the missus. Sure, some will chirp you for ditching the tents, but we all chose our own comforts, be it a R200k bike, luxury accommodation or something simple like a sports massage after each stage. Your medal does not look different to the guys out there on single speeds, drinking battery acid and sleeping on the cold hard floor every night.

Probably the best stage race in SA. Not too big, hardly any congestion, excellent food and race villages. Will definitely do it again but it is getting expensive.
