How expensive is swimming?

Humpday Rant Time! Okay, before I start ranting, I want to make sure that I have a legitimate reason.

Our local 50m "public pool" charges R60 per swimming session. Or R45 if you buy 10 at a time. On top of that the pool is booked out 50% of the time by elite swimming groups, leaving only odd hours available.

And when it is available, the lanes are run width-wise (25m-long, instead of 50m) half of the available time.

Where do you guys swim? And what are the rates?

Rather try buy a season or 1/2 season ticket, if you use it 2 or 3 times per week it makes less cents...more sense. Or check to see if you join a swim squad if you get an even better rate perhaps...?

CROWDS....this is one of the reasons why i'm thinking of training for a Ultra duathlon instead of a tri next year....i hate having to "fight" for space to swim. The coached swimmers and the schools take up most of the lanes and leave 2 lanes for the general public (25m pool) Often there are between 5 - 10 swimmers sharing a lane, each one doing his own thing. I've had a few arguments with other swimmers who have no clue about training pool etiquette and tbh i don't need that kind of stress every time i go swim.

Our fee's are also pretty expensive: Chf 9 for a single session (ROE = +/- 14:1)

Its better to buy a 3 monthly (Chf 100) or 6 monthly (Chf 160) ticket than paying the single fee every time

My friend trained for the iron man in his pool at home, he tied himself around the waist to old bicycle tubes on one end of the pool. Worked well, but the only problem was that he did not know how far he had swim per session.

LOL a true ysterman... with the fancy watches now you should be able to count your strokes and use your average stroke count per length of a 25 / 50 m pool to calculate the distance....

In Pretoria...

besides Hillcrest, where are the public pools? I never see any.

There is one in Sunnyside (Which you should avoid and is used more by the locals as a play pool) and there is one in the Moot as well.

R180 season ticket, can swim from 05:15-18:00 during the week. There are some people around, but not crazy busy. Holidays is a different story in the afternoons though, so I take the 05:15 option then.

As for coaching, R250p/m and it's made a huge change to my comfort while swimming.

O ja, this is in Sasolburg.

Have you ever thought of approaching one of your local schools and ask if you can use their facilities during the times they are not in use. I'm sure you can come to some sort of agreement for a small fee.

The only problem I see with this could be the accountability of the school should something happen to you during your swim. But then again they can incorporate some sort of indemnity in the agreement.

Pool

Ellis Park, municipal pool, R 260.00 per season (1/2) year if you are not a member of a club. Access is from 5 am to 6 pm. Open all year, heated, two pools, 50 meter and 25 meter. Lanes to keep the casual swimmers at bay.

Speedo

About R 300 get the Endurance one as it handles the chlorine better. Lasts about a year if you swim often.

I swim there three times a week in summer, twice in winter. lekker.

Kings Park Pool (Durban) charge R15 for a session. I think you can get 30 vouchers for about R12 a voucher, but not too sure. Was swimming once a week at Virgin, but as I used the gym for nothing else, R100 per swim was a bit hard to justify...

Slight hijack: I have often thought about swimming at the VA but have absolutely no idea what the correct etiquette is (other than wearing a swim cap and not peeing in the water). Must you ask to share a lane with someone? Can you have more than 2 people per lane? What happens if someone is faster than you, is it like singletrack and you have to pull over?
