I live in Modderfontein and have extra milk kefir grains if you are willing to collect. No charge.

That would be awesome! I will make a plan and come and get some.

Thanks so much!

I saw a place here that sells the powder, I’m hesitant to buy it as I don’t know if it is the OG. Has she been able to re-use the grains that formed? I read somewhere that the powderd stuffs grains are not as good as the grains themselves.

I have no problem with it at all. The grains changed from powder to grains. It has the better known form or the form as I know it.

I sent Kief culture a msg to ask if they are open over the festive season. They are closed untill the 7th but replied and I got some grains. Excellent service from them! Can’t wait to get my water and milk kefir growing.

This topic seemed extremely interesting to me and I'm always keen to try something new.... Just the whole aspect of fermenting anything simply puts me in the yuck state, however I can also stomach quite a bit of stuff and stuff, and after reading up on all the health benefits I decided why not.

So I went and bought the Kefir Grain Starter pack at Dischem which contains dehydrated Kefir Grains. This this has been going for day 3 now to re-hydrate the grains (each 24 hours drain, harvest and new milk) and get them to produce my Kefir. I understand this may take anything between 3-7 days to complete.

Hoping for the best here  :whistling:

For anybody interested to try Kefir products, take a look on FaceBook for Kief Kulture. They are based in Weltevreden Park and make some lekker products at decent prices. Quite a few cyclists purchase their whey protein and recovery drinks.

Do you perhaps have a contact number or address for these guys?

It is pretty rad but it can be time consuming. I have my sourdough starter, milk and water kefir and they keep me busy. Can’t imagine more ferments. Although I suppose not all need constant attention.

I feel the opposite: Scoby's take too much attention to feed and move and knowing that it is a living microbe, it becomes like a pet. I would now rather just purchase Kefir products.

I have been fermenting milk kefir for about 4 years now so I get you.

When my grains get too much for my needs I look for a good family to donate the excess

4 Years, wow. Did you have to change the kefir grains at some point or did they simply multiply and kept you for this long?

If I may ask (surely you use a plastic sieve) do you use a very fine mesh (I received such a one in the starter kit) or a more course type plastic sieve.

I find the fine one takes forever to drain, even with the help of stirring with a plastic spoon and information that I have gathered thus far is that the milk kefir is supposed to be like a liquid yogurt, where as mine is more milky again given the fine mesh.
