Just a question, as part of registration, you have to confirm and update your medical details as well as confirm your medical aid if applicable. All the info is there as part of registration... so why not just take that info rather than force people to do something which they consider over and above person intrusion... especially with regard to the way they have worded and requested this information. i.e compulsory else you may not be allowed to cycle.

I have no idea why they opted for this approach.

As I said, I don't have anything to do with the study, I just have some insight into the study over the last couple of years, and a bit of where they want to go, and why its needed.

thanks for coming here to add this insight. Just can't work out why they not upfront about it.

Very easy to make it voluntary but get good participation - as mentioned above.

Offer some free stuf e.g. throw in a handful of free places on the following year's ride - say 5 spaces drawn at random from all those who complete the questionnaire. Costs little to do, and getting a place everyone knows can be tricky. So my bet is you'd get a really decent take-up. And because it was done voluntarily, people will probably fill it out properly rather than give junk answers to get it out of the way.

Capricorn - As far as I understand you would not be prevented from participating if you have increased risk, but you will be advised to get full medical clearance.

If your questionnaire places you at risk, you will be contacted for further investigations.

My ethics are a bit rusty - but I suspect that both of those sentences are ethical violations - you can't reccomend investigations UNLESS you are specifically asked for a reccomendation by the patient - and as a participant in an event is NOT a patient, clearly the researcher has no standing to make such a reccomendation.

Personally I would not fill it in beyond what is needed for emergency medical care - you have already signed a waiver indemnifying the organisers, and my medical information/history is not made freely available without DETAILS of exactly who has access, when they have access, how the information is protected, and who they share the information with, and what the penalties are for violations of any agreements  - clearly this process seems to have a few flaws in being open about most things - and is somewhat technologically challenged... thus placing patient information at risk... which by the way - is definately a violation of the HPCSA's rules... and a serious one at that.

Don't need to offer free stuff.

Just word the email like it should be to adults ie with respect and highlight the importance of participation and request that everyone participate for the benefit of all ctct participants.

Instead it's worded like a school teacher talking to grade 1 pupils on first day of school.

Rotary needs to task the grumpy retirees with non customer facing tasks.

Called them and it is legit. A bit odd that its compulsory though.

I suspect a condition of Mediclinics sponsorship that they are allowed to survey participants...?

There is no way they can make this questionnaire mandatory.  On entry we all checked the box to indicate acceptance of the terms and conditions.  In doing so we have entered into a contractual agreement with the CTCTT.  Legally, therefore, the CTCTT cannot unilaterally introduce additional terms to that contract.

I will not be filling the questionnaire in.  The email is in my waste basket.

If this is a study, then legally, we need to be informed beforehand.

We need to give consent for our information to be used.

This has to be voluntary.

Which regulatory body/ethics committee gave approval for this to be carried out ?

Where is the informed consent form?

Is our personal information in the information provided POPPI compliant?

There are too many unanswered questions?

I am not filling in any survey until these questions are answered.

I Have emailed the cycle tour organisers asking for clarity.

having read through this, I think the poo levels are slowly building...... with such large numbers it does make for a great long term study. But as many highlight, there are lots of issues. Also the tour organisers, once again, have done themselves no favours.

I forsee the next step....... you will need medical clearance... from a doctor who is recommended by the tour organisers, in conjunction with your training documentation from an accredited CTCT provider. Watch this space!

It's not uncommon for extreme events - although you usually get to use your own GP (which makes sense since they know your medical history), and it's at your own cost. For those it seems fair enough. For more "normal" events it should be at rider's discretion whether they need to seek medical advice for the distance and conditions.

So the CTCT is no longer a fun ride event for the masses and should be considered as an extreme sports event??

Not what my post says - read the whole post, including last two sentences.

I really, really hope nobody is planning on using this for a PhD (which is what I strongly suspect). I have been through ethical committee applications before and I will be surprised if this was passed using the process as it stands now. I have no affiliation nor affection for any specific hospital group and cannot see how they can force me to supply anything more than essential data. There is more than enough historical data available to do adequate planning. Rather plan for things like heat, rain or bushfires.

Or an alternative route that is 110 km long just in case there was a big fire on the original route that was put out the Thursday before the race.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust would like to assure all Cycle Tour entrants that the information given as part of the Medical Questionnaire is handled in the strictest of confidence, and kept on a secure server. This information is gathered to ensure that we as the event organisers, together with our partners Mediclinic, who assist in managing our medical roll out plan on Race Day, are better informed and therefor able to offer improved medical support to participants on Race Day.

Please rest assured that the information is gathered purely for use by ourselves and our medical partners for this event. The question relating to the data being used for research becomes the choice of the participant who may opt in, or out, of allowing their information to be used for research purposes.

The Medical Waiver completed as part of the Cycle Tour entry process contained no medical questions, but stated that the entrant will be required to complete a Medical Questionnaire. Entrants agreed to these terms when they entered the event, and we appreciate your kind cooperation in this matter.

If you have any queries – please contact the Race Office on Tel: 087 820 7223.
