Cycling for weight loss

My 2c...

 

Someone else mentioned that it's not necessarily what you eat or drink during a ride but what you eat afterwards that counts more.  I've been reading up and watching some documentary type movies and there's been a general mindset change that a calorie isn't a calorie; meaning that 100 calories of chocolate isn't equal to 100 calories of chicken.

 

Basically if you cut out refined and processed foods you'll be far more healthy and loose weight.

 

As for training, if you incorporate high intensity in to your training, you end up burning more calories after your session than what you would just doing low intensity training.  Both types (low and high-intensity training) have it's place in getting you fitter, so one isn't necessarily more important than the other.

 

My sources are: "Fed Up" the movie, "The Sugar Film", Racing Weight, by Matt Fitzgerald and then just a ton of online articles that I'm seeming to have a brainfart about at the moment.

A calorie is not a calorie from a nutritional perspective. In other words, you are better off eating 100cals of broccoli than eating 100cals of sugar, that's a health thing.

 

However a calorie is a calorie from an energy perspective. It is a constant unit of energy.

I realise that, but I was speaking on the part of nutrition, not energy.  Your body processes calories differently depending on what they are made up of.

agree completely :thumbup:

 

and the point of cycling is a healthy lifestyle so try to fuel your ride with healthy carbs (which are necessary for best performance )  instead of cheap junk carbs

 

and cut out the cheap junk carbs when you are off the bike also

Thanks, I have signed up for team vitality, I am in the JHB area, what are good events to start off with ?

 

You can also look at www.cycleevents.co.za. The first USN race this year is on the 23rd of Jan at Central Park / Modderfontein nature reserve. They normally have a 10km 30km and 50km distnace option for the race. The Nissan races is also nice, normally a 20km, 40km and 70km distance.

The thing is I have been on LCHF for a while now and loss some decent weight (>30kg), but it’s getting more difficult now and I seem to be plateauing with really slow weight loss on the diet. The guys I cycle with constantly tell me that riding harder is not going to assist with the weight loss and I need to ride easier with longer rides but more cadence, ideally in the 60-70% HR zone, is this a myth ?

You will lose weight if you get into anaerobic metabolism .In my case this happens around 90 minutes of 70% effort  if you ride 3 to 4 times a week .If you train every day it will happen in a shorter time period .You have to switch your body over to burning fat for energy and that happens only if your glycogen stores are depleted .If you eat or drink carbs to early this switch-over will be delayed .In Short .Ride longer than 60 minutes with only water every day and weight should come off if you don't, Glutt in between

I recently watched "the sugar film" and wow.... what got me most was that the man was consuming the same amount of calories but put on 8 kilos in 60 days....

 

the source of a calorie makes a huge difference by all accounts.

 

secondly, the amount of sugar we eat without realizing it is scary ...I have become a lot more vigilant now

Seeing as the body uses protein to repair muscles, I'm pretty sure that it will. 

Obviously you will gain muscle mass, which looks bad on the scale, but great in the mirror.

 

I am not a doctor though, so my observation is subjective

If its a protein shake you referring to, make sure its quality whey protein, and not the cheap junk that's filled with crap.

So add another R1000 to your monthly cycling Bill.

A guy i cycle with trained for the epic through a very well known coach and they told him LSD rides for losing weight. Low intensity but you must put the time in. He said it worked for him.
