What difference does the handlebar size make?

Wider bars, easier breathing (for me anyway).

Just have to watch out for him gaps some other people can squeeze through that I maybe can't :-)

Jip like pushing you bike trough the door way and forgetting how wide the bars are, lekker eina knucle and some skin of the shins.

when from a 680mm/80mm to a 780mm/60mm. way more control when riding.

There is also not one solution for all situations.

XC guys may have narrower bars, but downhill guys may have super wide bars for leverage and power over the rough stuff.

I have found that going for wide bars gives you a range of positions - leverage and power on downhills but then just hold on the inside of the brake / gears while climbing. I have seen a few guys who even put griptape on the inside of their handle bars, between the stem and brakes.

It also varies your body position so you don't do an entire marathon event in one position. Hands-in like Chris Foome on the uphills (bum on the saddle, straight back), then hands-out like Minaar on the downhills (bum as far back as possible :) ).

I think we're missing the element of type of riding on bar length/stem length.

Narrowest bar/longest stem to widest bar/shortest stem order is: marathon /xc/enduro/dh.

If you're riding for fun not time then tend towards the enduro/dh side regardless of what riding you're doing.

If time/performance is your goal then tend towards the marathon/xc side. Most "racing" falls into marathon category.

That said - personal choice/feel supersedes all the "rules".

Your height is also a factor.

I stand 1.93m. I have tried everything from 580mm to 800mm with stems from 50mm to 100mm. I have settled on 740mm on a 60mm stem.

This really is a personal choice based on your style of riding, terrain and comfort.

A 680mm bar for someone 1.6m may feel like a 800mm bar does for me.

My very good friend who is a national MTB champion will not ride wider than 640mm on a 80mm stem. He is 1.87m.

Lots of good advise already given on the thread.

Good luck and happy cycling  :)

Trance 27.5 Size: Large

Bar: 740mm

Stem: (OD2 sucks - 60mm - looking for a 50mm)

What is your height s14phoenix.

I stand 177cm, have a large frame and have that exact setup, also 740mm wide bars which I find perfect. I do however have a 50mm stem. Mine is a 2015 so no OD2 thankfully.

Funny that on MTBR's Trance 27.5 forum they punt an XL for my height which I think would be a bit ungainly.

yeah, you'd be L/XL on the trance. Still slightly "older" geo compared to the newer Enduro bikes, so you could be happy on both. Like I'd also probably be happy on a new Medium Reign at 180cm, but the Large gives me just that extra bit of top tube length and reach that I was missing on the older Reign.

Yeah I am 179cm and considered lengthy in the limbs.

I enjoy the large but I want a 50mm stem - honestly sometimes I think its a bit big (not getting my weight far enough back). I battle a bit with manuals and bunny hops. like I cannot get the front wheel up. Also why I battle with jumps and get that bucked feeling. I even set the rebound on the rear like 3-4 clicks from the end to try help with it.

I'm fine in the bunny-hop, manual department. Manualling on the trail I mean, still can't manual in a parking lot

Can't wheelie the damn thing. Either doesn't come up or it flips right over. Battling to find the balance point.

yeah... small manuals for drop offs etc is ok and getting over roots etc. on the trails.

I have been practicing that flipping wheelie for months now and at the point were i can get the wheel up nicley at the balance point but not as consistent as i would like.

One or two pedal strokes and it all goes t*ts up...swerving far too left or right and it just gets ugly. I practice in the driveway but there really is not enough space so i try practice on some flat sections while on the trail but find my fitness runs out in the latter part of the trail if i practice. Will keep at it though.

As for the manuel, i can do small ones but cant get the wheel up alot.

There's apparently a little blue pill for that...

But man, as for the manuals and wheelies...same issue even though I have a pretty short stem (50mm I think). Get it up but fall over left or right a bunch ... guess just need to actively practice it :D

The trance 27.5 does have fairly long chainsays making shifting weight far enough back  a bit tricky and needs a bit more coaxing the get going. Once going it also seems you tend to be quite high up.( admittedly it is VERY far away from being a BMX)

I can however play much easier on my wife's Anthem and bunny hop that pretty good. (she hates me riding her bike... even just in the garden) and my 26er Trance I used to flip without much issues...

Pedalling wheelies I can do no problem for 20-30 metres. Lifting without pedals is a problem. I practise every day now and still a issue.

Man this is becoming quite a hijack now...

When i first got wider bars 710  on the 29er it felt unnatural...coming off the 26 with 610 bars...so much so i swapped out the bars for 660cm...After riding those for a while i switched back to the 710's to compare and they actually felt fine.So i left them on and now i'm quite happy with the wider bar,..ok after 15 years of riding the 610's i still hit the occasional post  with the wider bars.I have increased the standard  grip width by about 4 cm per grip so it gives me more hand position space.
