What difference does the handlebar size make?

been running 700mm for the last 18months and its too wide. Going to fit bar ends to allow more hand positions and put that 15mm either side to good use.

on my marathon bike I went 90mm, 80mm, 70mm and then 60mm. It was absolutely crap for climbing so went back to a 90mm on a 595top tube (Giant Anthem 27.5 medium ).

the small control advantage gained from a wide bar and shorter stem really wasn't working with the need to sometimes stand and pedal and it made sitting and pedaling on really steep single track climb almost uncontrollable.

I can see the benefits when you descending alone but in XC and marathons that is a privilege reserved solely for the race leader.

wide and short or narrow and wide are just two extremes. Most find nirvana with something inbetween

share your height?

I think the Anthem is a bit shorter in the rear which could be why the longer stem could work better also on there. I think your weight placement is more easily moved towards the rear on the anthem and the trance having longer chainstays - weight distribution is more forward of the rear wheel.

the chainstays on the Anthem are about 1 cm shorter than the Trance. Seat tube angle also places you further back on the bike.

This is true even on the Pyga Pascoe OneForty650 which has 432 chainstays and 1/2 degree less on the seatpost. I presume this will make you weight also be more rearward than on a Trance 27.5

very interesting... LOL!

There's apparently a little blue pill for that...

But man, as for the manuals and wheelies...same issue even though I have a pretty short stem (50mm I think). Get it up but fall over left or right a bunch ... guess just need to actively practice it :D

I practice at home woth flats as there have been many a times where in have gone off the back of the back but still clutching the bars, feet on the ground and front wheel in the air thinking..wtf..

Ive come to the conclusion that it can be done but MUST be practiced regularly.

172cm

43.3cm wide across the shoulder

you are right about where the weight distribution needs to be. Hence I don't think a wide bar short (<80mm) stem Is for everyone. Its nto a blanket solution. it works when you have a long bike and you need to be able to move weight backward.

This is typical of most trail bikes.

XC bikes are built as short as possible

I only ride flats :D

Would a longer stem length with wide bars give me numb hands, I have 760 bars on a 90mm stem (yes I know that's long), however I am riding a Medium Trance 29er and I'm 1.84, tried the large but felt so wrong! Wanted to go shorter on the stem but wary of the bike size

It shouldn't, but just go get a cheap one and try it :)

Yeah I am 179cm and considered lengthy in the limbs.

I enjoy the large but I want a 50mm stem - honestly sometimes I think its a bit big (not getting my weight far enough back). I battle a bit with manuals and bunny hops. like I cannot get the front wheel up. Also why I battle with jumps and get that bucked feeling. I even set the rebound on the rear like 3-4 clicks from the end to try help with it.

I'm similar but opposite!

182cm but only 79cm inseam, so I've got short legs.

Large 2014 Trance with 740mm bars and a 60mm stem.

Also struggle to manual and bunny hop, but that's just because I don't have the skills (yet).

A wider bar + shorter stem will give you more control on technical sections where a short bar and longer stem will make the bike more responsive but twitchy

wide bar + short stem = more corner control + quick response (less straight line stability)

wide bar + long stem = more corner control + slower response (steer like a bus)

short bar + short stem = less corner control + quick response (therefore twitchy)

short bar + long stem = less corner control + slower response (but stable in straight line like road bikes)

Wow, dude... medium is far too small for you, man...

Also according to the height scale for The Trance I am right in the middle of the overlap between L and M. But when I eventually go Pyga will be on a Large, that's turning into a rather long term dream though. Just went and bought a 70mm stem and will see what that does
