My wife wants a MTB, just to ride for general fitness etc. But here is the thing, she is 1.82m tall. The mtbs at game makro etc all seem ti have small frames and its not comfy fit at all. She needs at least an M or L.

What now? We really dont want to spend a fortune and it doesnt nees to be top spec, shocks optional yoo. Help here boys, she thinks im talking nonsense

If you want her to enjoy it, look for the following :

Lightweight (up to a point obviously)

Shocks that are softly sprung or air adjustable, and with adjustable rebound.

Hydraulic disc brakes.

Things that I see as performance items, my wife sees as comfort necessities.

There is no point to a shock that is hard to move, bounces back at a teeth rattling speed, and weigh a ton. And if you have less fore arm strength, hydro discs ensure descents are less scary.

She will ride a large very likely at that height.

How much riding has she doen before?

Depends on your budget - first bike and all and only bike - she would likely be okay on a nice hardtail.

Lots of nice stuff on the classifieds as pointed out and January is always a month some people are dumping things so you can do some deals.

Stay away from Makro/Game/Sportsmans etc unless you are really knowledgable.

As mentioned above.

make sure you get something that she will enjoy riding. My wife hated her first bike, it actually put her from riding until I got her a nice cannondale with a air fork. Now she loves it .

Just been in a similar situation and bought the Miss' a second-hand Silverback Sola 1 for 12k of Gumtree.

Spent a bit of time looking at new sub-R10,000 29ers and most of them are not great. Heavy frames, with heavy wheels, pogo-stick fork and rubbish brakes.

The Sola 1 is 11kgs, XT gears, Slx hollow-tech cranks and ZTR crest wheels. It is one hellava bike.

I replace the nobbly 2.3 mtb tires with thinner, more efficient cyclo-cross type tires for general fitness riding. Wide 700c tires.

It is actually so cool, I am thinking of getting one for commuting to work.
