Why is my carbon bike so heavy...or is it?

So I took the plunge and got a carbon hardtail.....KTM Myroon Master 29er (Large)

 

Now Ive never ridden a carbon bike and I was told if you want to go light you go carbon....fair enough. Maybe my expectations were a bit high as I thought if wasnt going to be careful I'd be able to throw the bike through the ceiling lifting it or something. Ride ready it weighs in at 11.4kg (SH 520 pedals, Fox CTD fork, full XT, 40/28 chainrings, Maxxis Ikon front and rear, DT Swiss Spline M1700 rims)

 

The bike really does ride extremely smooth and I'm very happy with the bike. I just thought it would be lighter. The website showed bike weight at 10.8kg, but thats probably a medium or a small frame with no pedals?

 

I'm not unhappy, just don't have anything with the same specs basically to compare it with.

 

Any advice?

carbon isnt always the lightest. I've got a canondale flash 29 alu. I at one stage considered buying a carbon frame but after much research realized that the canondale alu frame is one of the lighter frames out there

Ha ha.

 

You can get it lighter.

 

Wheels, tyres, pedals, bar, stem, seatpost.  All the bits and pieces add up.  You could easily shed 0.5 kg, and up to a kg, but it will cost you, and it's a disease.

Does sound heavy. I built up a 1x11 Momsen hard tail at 9.4kg, and my current rather porkie Titus dual sus comes in at 11.8 with heavy tires. It is understandable that the Titus is quite heavy as it is not top of the range stuff, but I would have expected a KTM hard tail to be a lot lighter than that. Do you know what the frame weight is alone? The Momsen was 1.2kg with BB. After that it comes down to component weight.

Thats very similar to the weight of my wifes medium 26er Zula with DT AM1600 wheels, fat 26er tyres and a sid carbon crown fork.

 

You'll probably find that your fork is at the heavier end of the spectrum and 29er wheels and tyres tend to weigh a bit more than the smaller ones. The wheels on my road bike are Mavic and weigh more than my wide 26er enduro wheels.

You can't compare HT to dual weights. A dual frame typically has an extra 800g in pivots and reinforcing and a shock is 350g.

 

My 29er dual in XL weighs in at 11.7kg with Reverb dropper post, tools and triple crank in bad ass black.

 

I have built a large dual that came in at 9.9kg, fully loaded. But it did cost my customer an additional R17k to drop from the standard large weight of 11.4kg to 9.9kg.

 

I have calculated I can get a large to 9.2kg for another R19k. But funnily enough I have not found a customer who is happy to spend R36k extra to save 2.2kg.  And that's at pre David Des van Rooyen exchange rates.

P.S. You didn't expect a bike called Mater to be a lightweight did you?

I'd actually like to check....need to take everything off and weigh. I weighed my front DT Swiss wheel with the tubeless Ikon on and it weighed in at 1.8kg (bathroom scale) - had about 90ml sealant in as its a new tyre.

Bathroom scales aren't particularly accurate. Maybe your bike isn't that heavy, perhaps just upgrade your scale and you might drop a few kilo's on the bike and yourself :P

On the DT Swiss site those wheels are 1785g so theres about 200g to loose there for R7-8k. Tyres you always drop weight on but you pay in grip and weak sidewalls. If you convert it to 1x11 that will also drop another +-400g. Also the XT 11 speed cassette is a chunk heavier than even the Sram GX, but its a new freehub and cassette. Then theres the little bits like: seatpost, bars, stem, saddle. But overall I would reccomend to have an extra kg on the bike that is reliable compared to the rest of us with constantly empty wallets

My large 29er HT comes in at 10.1 kg with a mechanical dropper post. The dropper post is about 200g heavier than the carbon seatpost that was in there originally. Considering I spent less than R26k in total for the 2 month old bike as well as new handlebars, grips and the dropper post, I think I got an absolute bargain.
