What is interesting to me is I see a more 1x setups on MTB, but out on the road I have not seen any other 1x bikes. Pity really because if you fit a MTB cassette to a road bike you give it a much wider range than with a road cassette.

For those doing road 1* do you just use a standard chainring i.e. not narrow wide and use no chainguide?

Edit - thinking about making some changes to my MonsterCross that I use for gravel grinding ..... currently 32NW * 11-25 Road but with an XT RD

perhaps go 42*11-36 rather?

I would have likes a narrow wide, ended up with one of these : http://www.amazon.com/Stronglight-Dural-110mm-Shimano-Chainring/dp/B008DFUISS

The jump that chain makes when shifting was enough to throw it off the chainring a few times so I fitted a cheap Claris FD - now it stays put. I am not sure if a narrow wide would solve it, could be that the jumps on a 8speed is wide enough to cause that where as on a 10 speed they are not as violent due to the tighter spacing.

I do have a chainguide though that I could use but it never looks as neat   - I will do some 'testing' then

i am also thinking about changing from the 2x10 to 1x11 setup. I have sram currently on a stan's 3.30 rear hub. i was looking at rapide options, but need clarity on whether I will need to do anything with my rear hub for the 11 speed cluster.

On my Easton hub, it fitted like a glove. I just fitted the very thin "spacer" on the shoulder side of the hub, and Bob's your Uncle.

I want to hijack also for a question in almost the same circumstance.

Just came back from the LBS, and my son's bike's drivetrain is done. Currently on a converted 1X10 setup using Absolute Black 32T chainring, KMC chain and Praxis Works 11 - 40 cassette.

I see CWC has a special in the Shimano 1x11 for R4099. Should I go for that, or just renew what he has currently?

This is for an XCO setup.

If you sold his current RD and shifter to recover some cost you'd be at a very similar price point (after buying a new 10sp cassette, chain and NW).  Therefore I'd suggest an upgrade to 11sp.  The gaps are slightly better between gears, and the XT 11 shifter is really nice.

I have been on 3x10 for about 2 years an before that 3x9, recently moved to 2x11 on 650b bike.

I would consider 18for lap racing and not much else.

The talk of simplicity is bs in my opinion. Weight saving. . One can in90percent of general riding save 350-500gr from your belly.

With 2x and a 11-40 cassette you have a bigger range with smaller increments between gears. This on the long haul and long climbs makes it worth the 500gr weight penalty.

I recently bought a "new" MTB after selling my road bike. It came with Sram 1x10,

All I can say is what a pleasure it is to use. Click and gears change. I do road riding mostly, and those 10 gears are enough for me. i have a 34 upfront, and an 11/36 on the back.

Will I go back to multiple chain rings? Probably not. Will I upgrade to 1x11? Lets see the prices when I get there.
