1x11 or not

Got a new bike recently with 1 x 11 XO1 setup. I am seriouslyimpressed with it, down-shifting to an easier gear is one smooth shift away, 2 max shifts.

2 x 11 makes no sense. The extra weight of the extra 42 sprocket at the back is a total waste where you could just have fitted a smaller 24T chainring, or just HTFU already. With 28/38 chainrings on the shimano system I honestly fail to see its purpose.

However I must say that I am battling to setup the shifting to be smooth through all the gears. It is definitely harder to fine tune than 2x10 due to the B screw that puts the derailleur so far away from the cassette which is required with the 42T extender. I am still fine-tuning so maybe it will improve - I hope.

I think if you are upgrading your whole groupset from lets say Deore 2x10 to XT M8000 with 1x11 and you are thus improving shift quality and dropping weight anyway it will be worth it.

The new derailleurs are built for these ratios and shifting will be much smoother.

I think the best would be the 9/44 with a 34T. Should solve all the problems...

I rode Tankwa Trek last weekend. For those that know the Merino monster is a climb like no other in SA - 1000m in 8km! My partner was running 1x11 (32T) vs my 2x10. He took serious strain up the climb having to dig really deep to match my speed. On the slightly downhill district road on the other side of the mountain I had to wait for him as he couldn't maintain the high cadence needed and spun out at the end of a 4+ hour day. We both found this frustrating as we were competing for an age group podium finish. Needless to say he is converting 2x11 in time for the Epic.

I find myself with a 1 x setup because (unknowingly...no comments pls) I bought the Vipa Team Issue that is 1 x specific.

I'm currently running 32T with 11-40 cassette and its not too bad. Rode Tankwa including Merino Monster and Mamba in Sabie on Saturday. I would say the Mamba was at my limit, anything steeper and I'll be walking. On the district roads I manage to hang on....just. When replacing cassette I'm going 11-42 although changing to SRAM 10-42 should be perfect.

Which ratios cassette was he using? What ratios are you using?

curious how you found the sabie on the 34T?

I ended up not taking the drive through to sabie as the safety of my pregnant wife could not be guarenteed.

We did however do some proper climbing on Saturday and I didn't have to walk any of the climbs, so for now the 34 is staying on the bike

According to my magic chart which is dependant on (wheel circumference) he would have been better off with a wider cassette and a 10/42 would have done the trick (abeit still a bit short on the top end)

There is some more ratios in there as well to compare...

  maybe he needs the 11-42 with a 34T and a cup of La Farge... 32.5N should do it...

Seriously though.... I am gonna miss my 42/11 on the downhills where I hit 60km/h like the Magalies Monster.

best I start saving for a 11sp hub and e*thirteen 9/44.

I guess you're right - if he wasn't so soft we could've won the stage instead of finishing third.

and therein lies the rub...

But I guess 1x11 must be crap

Granted the extra two teeth would've helped on the climb.

Now about the downhill and spinning out on the 32?

Don't be so sensitive - I don't think anyone has said 1 x 11 is crap

Which is why I recon 10/42 may have helped - closest thing to the 2x. It would however require changing out a few bits but it may have made enough difference.

Don't be so sensitive it is a common joke made about gear ratios.

I posted some ratios that is available to try help out on the selection of gear ratios for next time or have him change to 2x if 1x does not suit the needs.

We all know it is limiting using 1x - hell 2x is limiting compared to 3x - depending whether you need it or not.

XTR 1x11 32 with 11-40

XTR 2x10 38/26 with 11-36

Yep in this case, assuming both bikes are same wheel size, the 2x10 gives 11% easier gearing at the short end and 19% longer legs at the long end. At the end of a long race when your legs are tired this makes a difference. Also at altitude or in very steep terrain.

For a 2h to 3h trail ride at weekends on known trails the 1x11 is probably awesome.

I also prefer 2x10 for races when you tend to push a bit harder but 1x10 is awesome for all my local trails and social riding.
