definitely illegal to cycle on M4 going north until after Umhlanga. There is an alternative route parallel to the M4 which the majority of cyclist use ! Saying that even after Umhlangs to Ballito it is extremely dangerous. Used to be a quiet road by now with development in Ballito it is hectic and to add additional danger there is now the Casino at Sibsya - equals plenty pissed drivers early in the morning on that section of road ! Add pissed drivers coming from Suncoast and nightclubs in Durban it has always been a disaster waiting to happen !

@Cheabb78. Just because many people ride on the M4 doesn't make it legal. Interesting article here http://roadsafety.co.za/2011-08/are-cyclists-allowed-to-ride-on-a-freeway-or-national-road/ about the legalities. The M4 Ruth First is marked as such freeway at Argyle Road where it begins in the South.

Having said that there are safe cycling passing signs over the Umgeni River! Either way it's a tragedy on the M4 again...

That's interesting, I admit I'm no expert.

As it happens, there are groups in Durban who have been in discussion with the municipality about establishing a cycle lane on that stretch.

Sadly none of that changes the tragic events of this morning, but perhaps there's a bit of hope for the future?

Hectic news,  roads here are insanely dangerous, Better to cycle facing the traffic, at least then you can see these murderers coming and take avoidance.

There's a lot of cyclists on the M4 every weekend, so yes. The stretch they were on has a wide yellow lane, so we can only speculate at this time as to what happened.

Have also seen this link, look at the state of the car, must have been flying!!! So sad and unnecessary!

This doesn't mean they're allowed on the Freeway...

Reg323 explicitly prohibits the use of bicycles on Freeways.

What the Reg number that prohibits idiots from being in control of a motor vehicle?

I hear you. It's a tragic scenario. We don't know the details though - riders two or more abreast? Riders spread out some distance of (assumingly) the safety car (group of 40 after all)? Riding on a Freeway illegally... We're always quick to jump on motorists yet we don't help the cause... jump traffic lights, ride where we shouldn't etc.

Anyway. What interests me in this scenario specifically is how insurance and/ or medical aid would view this? So if there were no fatalities, would insurance pay out for the bike and would medical aid entertain medical claims? When fatalities are involved, would life insurance pay out? Etc...

Very sad. Rip.

Even if they shouldn't have been riding on the freeway shoulder it's no excuse for reckless driving. The damage to that car shows speed and if the impact happened in the shoulder as the pictures suggest the driver needs to see jail time.

Apparently a further car drove into the police blockade at the accident...

And a further report of a cyclist critically injured near blue lagoon after a collision with a vehicle.

Going to be interesting to see how this is viewed.  I would imagine driving into a police blockade will be taken more seriously than killing people on a bicycle.

History has shown that hitting a cyclist whilst driving gets a slap on the wrist.

I hope to hell I am wrong.

Rip to the Riders, condolences to there families and the Kings Park Cycling Club.

Was in Durbs riding the SA's course and the report we got (Unconfirmed) 4 occupants in a GTI were dicing with another car and hit the riders at about 160kph. There were pissed, 2 ran from the seen, the driver and other passenger got a beating.

Then once the road block was up another pissed driver crashed into the road block.
