i24 Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 We have access to the green belts precisely because they have been used for years by cyclists and were a logical target for trail expansion. The reality is this is how mountain biking has always spread and will continue to, here and around the world. You like to think that because you have been riding these trails illegally and that nothing bad has happened, you now have some kind of entitlement to ride them. But there is another side to this. There are many cyclists who have avoided riding these trails for equally many years because they are illegal. If all those cyclists had ignored the rules like you, there would have been many more mountain bikes on those trails and it is likely that something bad would have happened. Possibly a total clamp down on all mountain biking on City and SANPark land in the South Peninsular. Now we do have a section of the green belts that we can all ride legally. Suddenly there are a lot more cyclists on those trails. This is a trial period and a lot of people are watching. We have to go totally out of our way to ensure that cyclists respect each other and the other trail users. This is the only way to keep access to these trails and to have a chance of getting access to more land. Those guys who go and ride illegal trails at this stage are like germs infecting a post operative wound.
SCD Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 ...entitlement is the biggest enemy of this country... shoo

raptor-22 Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 can you prove this?Maybe converse with the people who ride there and live along the green belt. The aire of entitlement will blow your mind
Headshot Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 ...entitlement is the biggest enemy of this country... shooWho is more entitled, the complaining walker or the cyclist looking for a safe place to ride? You could easily argue the opposite is true. People don't feel entitled enough to demand ethical leadership and good governance in SA. People love to harp on about a cyclist they saw behaving badly as if this somehow defines the behaviour of all. You want total conformity and obedience - get some clones out there on bikes. Everyone is different and the guy DJR berates for riding too fast may just have been having a bad day - who knows. Any of you ever speed in your cars, cross a solid line, text or heaven forbid smoke some weed? i24, the number of cyclists on those trails grew exponentially because Tokai remains closed. Cyclists are concentrated in a small area increasing user conflict situations. Its a set up working against cyclists and holds us to a higher standard than any other trail user. So much hypocrisy....

HowardSteele Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 OK ...real green belt newsLots of work being done on the sewage pipes all along from the Tokai side through to Peddlars...they are lining the pipes with a fiberglass coating so they divert the waste water and pump high pressure water stream through followed by the self coating fiber lining...Not to much inconvenience but it has created some muddy sections. Warning ..the little wooden bridge at the Silverhurst trail section has become as slippery as an ice rink...Try and ride as straight onto it as possible i hit it at an angle this morning and my back wheel slid out ...I managed to land on my but on the bridge but my bike ended up in the stream. Request maybe signs should be put up like they have in the NorthLook like the Southerners can't tell their left from their right either
openmind Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 I rode down and up the greenbelts this morning, from Rhodes drive all the way down to Bergvliet (where I had to turn back to get home on time). What a blast! Thank you trail fairies and everyone who lobbied for this. I passed lots of walkers with dogs, slowing down as appropriate, and everyone was cool. The trails are in perfect condition at the moment, not too dry and not too wet. Go ride it if you have not yet done so. Makes up a little for the loss of Tokai and it's much easier and flowy riding than Table Mountain.

Was puzzled till now, thanks!
dirtypot Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 I just got an email from SAN Parks saying that the EMP has been approved! Does that mean that we can ride these trails now?
rock Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 Rode the Green Belt legally for this first time on Sunday. Having grown up right there and riding it since 1991 it really brought back some memories. Last outing there I think was around 2005. Will be back this weekend. well done to all involved.
Headshot Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 I just got an email from SAN Parks saying that the EMP has been approved! Does that mean that we can ride these trails now?No, that was the management plan for the park as whole. That email has got more than a few people excited. The EMP is many moons away from approval/implementation I think... It seems that if you commented on the EMP you are on their stake holder DB for other things too: https://www.sanparks.org/assets/docs/conservation/park_man/tmnp_approved_plan.pdf
Alouette3 Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 Waiting with bated breath for the EMP to be approved so I can start riding the pipe tracks an Lions head/ Signal hill.
