At this point in time there are a number of wholesalers who have taken advantage of the public's perception in the recent fall of the rand to adjust prices, or, they have over reacted as the rand has recovered since December. Worse yet they paid for a shipment in December and will now be faced with asking a higher price compared to someone who has a lot of old stock or has just paid for stock.

In order to squeeze the smaller guys out of the market you need chunks of cash to take advantage of fluctuations and carry large stocks. That way when the rand hits the fan the smaller guy feels the pinch and the big guy can absorb the hit/rand cost average. The big guys have the luxury of being able to choose between market share or margin.

As for me, I don't care who does what I only care about my pocket.

in fact the problem is the cycling industry thinking they can manufacture/market/sell a consumable item like a cassette for the price of an entire groupset.

R6k cogs, no thanks.

I had a chat with Bring it on Cycles and those are outdated pricing they are busy updating the website

There you have your answer... probably the prices on the websites are not current and when you try to purchase you will get a story and likely be advised that is out of stock... when stock does arrive (or they have updated their website) the stock will be available and the price will likely be considerably different!!

And it is perpetuated by consumers buying it because they think they NEED it.

Why the massive difference in price between Shimano and Sram cassettes? Shimano around R100 and Sram XO1 at R3000+. These are approximations but nonetheless a lot higher.XT and XO1 similar in quality and one off top of range XTR and XX

I think you forgot a "0" for your Shimano XT.

On to the price differences the major ones are: Weight, Material and US $ vs Japanese ¥.

Edit: Also manufacturing processes. eg. stamped pinned cassette vs a single machined block.

Will be buying ALL Bring it on Cycles stock tomorrow.

It is more than R1000 cheaper than wholesale??

Guess the item won't be available...

How many units did you manage to buy?

Personally am glad to see a huge difference in price...

  • means that each shop decided its mark-up differently
  • could also be NOS or new stock depending on when the Forex was purchased for the orders to import
  • Proves that there is no Cartel with regard to prices for cycling goods
  • Is an open and free market... so shop around !!

I would be concerned if all the shops had similar prices... and for those prepared to shop around, you can get the best price or a bargain.

Good point!

Look at Apple products, Apple in the U.S. / the distributor Core stipulates that markup can only be around 10% and thus nearly every store sells Apple products for the same price with no room to bargain.

I'll just say this...

Big thumbs up to 'grey market' products and their screwing over of ripoff South African distributors.

Waiting on them to confirm that they have stock before I transfer R35k into their account and then battle to get that back...

Have not answered my mail yet.

See they have in excess of 100 available at that price...

XT equivalent to X01? Have another one, man. X01 is close to XTR & XX. In fact I think it's the same cassette as the XX1.

XT cassette should be compared to the GX when it comes to quality.

X1/X01/XX1 are all very close when it comes to cassette quality.

i'm sure that oke who tried to get an entire groupset from the 'lab for R250 would be quite excited

Are you CRC preferences set for UK or SA? If it's SA then you'll not be charged the VAT so the cost is: £117.49 if uk based and £107.49 is In SA. Bikesy doesn't take into account your location and VAT I think.

And UK VAT is 20% so if UK price is 117.49 then VAT free price should be 97.91 but it's not as CRC is pocketing the difference. So of course they love foreign customers as it drives their margins up 10%.

Maybe it is to do with time of purchase as well.

Anything purchases 6 months ago and still in stock will be WAAAAAAAAAAY cheaper than something that just arrived in stock yesterday (thanks jacob)

And the distributor/retailer won't be around for too long if he can afford to sit on stock for 6 months...
