The portage is about 1 km long I think. I can't imagine carrying a strap to just tie around my bike when it would be faster (for me) to push it up a hill. Amazing what different people find to assist them with different kinds of issues. The less I have to carry the better. But that's just me.

Just pre-tie the strap to the bike, no need to worry about carrying anything extra or it getting in the way.  :-)

Don't overdo it before getting to the portage section (it is easy to get carried away, trying to stay with the other peeps)

This section is steep, and there is areas that resembles stairs, i.e.you cannot just push your bike over it, you must either carry it up, or lift the front wheel over each and every one. This is tedious and exhausting, especially for someone not used to hiking up steep slopes.

Save your energy, there is still lots of riding to be done on the other side, more so if its a windy day.

Enjoy.

agreed - first half of portage is easier to push and 2nd half even I carry with my puny upper body strength.

Based on the organisers' stage 1 summary, I calculate the compulsory portage is about 2km long.

It's our first year riding this event, but I get different distances talking to riders, some say 5km others say it's as far as 10km?

Depending on what time you arrive there, if its middle to back of pack, & you are not well trained hiker\trail runner & you didnt practice pushing\carrying your bike up hill on a very rocky steep climb while wearing mtb shoes, it will definitely feel like 10km's. Its roughly 1km max but it will take you anything between 30-60mins to get up there with possibility of cramping at the top.

I think its this segment:

Have not done it myself but i have a lot of experience pushing my bike up hills!

That is the segment yes!  Just remember that when you get to the top you are still in the portage zone and should not get on your bike.  There is about 400m extra that you need to push until you get to the jeep track and only then can you mount your bike.

Also, remember the cramp block!! If you are not used to hiking with some extra weight, them cramps will get you!

For an below average weekend warrior what can i expect my finish time would be for day one? ( ok how long is a piece of string....??) :whistling:

Look for the fat guy on a giant anthem in elgin vintners kit. i am also below average weekend warrior. I'll tell you the time by this time friday! But deep down inside i am hoping for 5hrs. But we are riding waterpoint to waterpoint, if we feel strong we will push if we dont we will take it easy.

I am riding with a strong partner so hopefully he can lend a hand if need be.

We rode A2Z on saturday and the trail is in OK-ish condition. I just want to make it over the portage and then the fun will start!

Maybe we must hook up together because my partner is also much stronger......pm me your cell no. for arrangements. I was thinking of mixing my partners multi -vits with sleeping tablets that will maybe help me a bit.......... :w00t:

Can't remember exactly but I think it took us about 15 minutes last time around. I will try to remember to measure it this year.

I honestly don't get the panic around this section, last year we were mid-bunch adventure and the walk took us about 20 minutes, part of it was used to take selfies of us standing in the queue up the mountain.

I suffered far more in that gale force winds on Day 3 than doing this 1km hike-a-bike.

Most importantly we are getting.... a riding shirt, a jacket, socks and knowing these guys a whole bunch more. Pretty cool.

I thought we just get a jacket?

And the cycling shirts this year looks awesome...but the part i am looking forward too the most is from now untill the day i die i will pitch up at all rides with this w2w jersey!

So the W2W is upon us, I wont be riding in the events, but will be present at all three of them(Adventure, Ride and Race), supporting in a way, so if you happen to realize who I am when you see me do say hi.
