Is the "blue plastic" rim tape readily available to us ?

The fibre one is a real lady dog come time to clean the rime and prep for the next set of tyres ....

Most bike shops should be able to get it.
I can supply you with a roll of your chosen width (23-33mm in increments)

60m long, for R275 plus delivery.

PM me.

Why are you replacing the rim tape when you replace the tyres?

The fibre stuff comes off with the tyre, cos it's poo. The adhesive sticks to the bead of the tyre and the rim bed better than it sticks to the tape itself. Cleanup takes about half an hour per rim.

@ChrisF paraffin or artist's turps is the quickest way we've found to get rid of the glue.

As we come to the end of the year, I was crunching the numbers.

It's not been the best year for business, admittedly, but it's been fun and rewarding.

Some very special wheel sets have been assembled in, and left my workshop.

How was your 2024? Any exciting plans for 2025?

Those figures are impressive. Well done Nick.

I thought I was good at 137 built for the year.

Unfortunately my spoke tensioning equipment after 15 years as a pro is showing signs of wear and tear🤕.

Mostly I dont replace it.  But every so often the tape moves when you debead the old tyres .... and then a quick job turns into a "not so short" session .....

I have also experienced the fibre tape (almost like duct tape) lift when the tyre debeads.

And if you are not careful when using a tyre lever to take off the tyre, the lever pokes though the tape.

Ok I’ve not had these issues with the fibre / duct tape, especially the thick Gorilla tape variety but thanks for the insight. I do prefer the yellow Stans tape and the blue one most bike shops use but Gorilla has been good enough for me 🤞

I've found the Gorilla tape too thick, and can definitely leave a thick sticky messy residue if you remove it from the rim.

The blue or yellow plastic tapes leave no residue and are thin enough not to affect how some tyres seat on the rims.

Can you tell what make/model the hubs are?

Adapter end caps are incredibly hub-specific.

If available, swapping end caps to thru-axle could be very easy.

hey Nick..

they are the Giant SLR 1 Disc wheels and QR hubs that came with that rim from Giant..

to be honest there are two bikes I am looking at now as potential options.. I will probably buy outright and then sell the old steed and put that into a Wheelset.. Order from you.! so ill be in touch to consult on that.. I would much rather support you if I can..

Yup, looks like the end cap adapters are available to convert that wheel to thru-axle.
PM me if you'd like to get it done.

A quick photo dump of the last few year-end wheels to roll out of my workshop:

  • An e-bike wheelset featuring Stan's Flow EX3 rims built onto Hope Pro5 hubs with e-bike rated rear hub (steel freehub body) and Vittoria Mazza 27.5 x 2.6" tyres
  • A Nextie 60mm deep rim-brake road wheel laced onto a Hope RS4 hub with Pillar bladed spokes.
  • A pretty rare 27.5" Stan's Valour wheel rebuilt with new spokes and nipples.

Merry Christmas everyone, and have a happy, safe and blessed New Year!

have this (brand new) if someone want to build a gravel / road disc wheelset.

How the world changes - Arc24s were MTB rims when they came out. Now they are being pitched as gravel/road (still too wide for road IMO)
