Chaoyang tyres?

What is the tread like? I bought Vittoria's for R100each for training and fitted them in Dec. Still going strong.

Would love to hear your feedback on the tyres after you tested it out thoroughly.

Not sure I am approaching this sensibly, but their first ride will be the 200km Audax on Sunday....

Chaoyang Viper Shark Skin:

I must be honest I didn't think much when I put them on for the first time. (I have ridden conti's since '88)

My BIO: I am 80kg and I ride my road bike like a gravel bike/mtb and I have no issues doing stretches of gravel with my rd bike, bunny hop sidewalks ens.

I have had this tyre on the REAR since Feb this year, have done 5320km till now...not much I know. I took tyre off to see how much tread is still on and was pleasantly surprised that it still felt thick, like it can do another 1000km...

2 punctures on them, both metal pieces

It also comes on and off an American classic without tyre levers....and a conti on those rims is a bi-atch

If you ever wanted a solid tyre at R285.00 per 700 x 25 foldup this is your boitjie!!! (my retail price instore)

Good value for money

No feedback after 220km odd as I had no punctures, nor mishaps.

Sunday the wind blew everything else into irrelevance and today the legs were not working at capacity.

Going to go out on a limb but the Vipers feel like they roll easier than the Armadillos I had previously.

Hopefully I’m not making a mistake, eager to find out. Less than half the price of a Gatorskin!

Honestly I'd have bought the speedshark. The tread has much more groove than the vipers. But Chaoyang do make good tyres all round.

I heard Rouxenator turns them inside out after 10 000km then he still does 36one and K2C with them.

Yup, these things can go way further than most people will give them credit.

The swansong to my last pair was actually TransKaroo, not 36one, but they held up remarkably well over that 240km.

OK, can you guys point me in the right direction, where in Gauteng will I be able to get these, I am due for a new rear Tyre.

I bought he Vipers from Metro Cycles, however in Jhb, the Lab might oblige (online?) with the Speed Sharks @ R149

Could be cheaper elsewhere, but how much?

I did 174kms on Sat and 102kms on Sunday and the tyres are awesome and surprisingly quite comfortable on the rough roads through Stand and Stellies(Shark Skin Viper).. Personally, I feel they roll better than my Michellin Pro4 tyres which I had on previously and for the price I am going to get a few more before the price goes up to that of the Conti's and the likes.

I ended up going with the zaffiro fold ups oom cris had at one stage for R149 a pop - over 8000 km and it’s time for the bin included in that was 2 x70.3 n 2 Ironman events, I did start to wonder on the second Ironman if I should not replace but was so cash strapped the gamble paid off,the zaffiro do have tons of little cracks on the sidewalls from day one but it was all superficial, they do tend to cut up easy tho saw that even after a few rides I had knicks on them but they held up superbly , they a nightmare to fit onto fullcrums initially after a while they come off n on easily as I removed the rear for a old tire for the trainer (only one rim set n no luxury to swap out the rear) , decent rolling and good grip in corners with the thread pattern. I would def buy them again but they R300 a piece nw n recon at 300 I’d try something else , if they cheaper or cheap again I would not even think about it n just go for them again. Priced right these will be my go to training tire , n when broke just race on them as well like I did.

The name is the only thing that's deceiving about these tyres... I rode Epic 18; Transbaviaans; W2W; Attakwas; Eselfontein; and Bo-Piketberg races on 2 sets...and not one puncture. Not one issue. I rate this brand...only one issue I have had is leakage from one tyre (that was promptly replaced by the supplier). The tyre would lose too much air overnight and the Stans would almost be visible in small droplets on the sidewall. But you'll know if this is an issue on the first day after installation. But as for strength and performance; I am a convert.
