I wonder what the motivation behind this was.

Was it a case of blatant falsifying of test?

Was it purely substandard testing?

Political interference?

Whatever, this is not very good.

I want to know too :cursing: All these muppets talk in circles without getting to the important things. What did they get wrong, exactly?

according to the Citizen story it is closed for refurbishment.

"However, SA Institute for Drug Free Sport (Saids) chief executive Khalid Galant said the lab, which was the only accredited testing centre in Africa, had closed in March for refurbishing, training and equipment recalibration."

Didn't you read the article - closed for refurb... and an expected closure.

It should have been done last year already knowing that this is an Olympics year

I have a sinking feeling that being in an election year the ANC would love to have some Sportsmen on the podium, by whatever means.

Then when they get bust they will accuse the authorities of being colonial racist imperialist scum that refuses to recognize the achievements of Africa. Politics and Sport - just like Russia and E. Germany, play well together....

Hahaha... was thinking the exact same thing! If only there weren't so many Visa regulations

Maybe this is a marketing ploy from Tourism SA?

Sounds like open season for the dopers to me!

Just don't travel with your kids now.

Stock up the cough syrup and lets ride

Are they just putting in some carpets, drapes and a new fire pool? You know, to enhance the security of the samples and the "process"!  Just kidding.

'refurbishing, training and re-calibration...'

No doubt lots of detail behind this story. But a couple of thoughts from the commercial world. If you're refurbishing a building, room or furniture, then create a temporary space to continue to conduct business from? Training should be on-going and not need you to shut down business. And re-calibration should also be on-going and be part of any world-class QA/QC program.

If there's new kit being brought on-line, keep the old-stuff going and then transition between the two.

Sadly this sounds like a PR snafu....

Apparently closed down due to renovations at the facility! Structural, operational, what kind of renovations? I missed the radio interview with Mr. Galant, any light shed on the above?

For those of you that doesn't know what is normally required in a lab - and lab standards can vary - this message of refurb, etc can sound quite innocent.

Here is my "over the top version"

Refurb - current lab did not meet the criteria w.r.t. the controlled environment needed by WADA to do these type of lab analysis

Training - lab personnel did not meet the standard to do lab analysis as per the STM's provided by WADA

Re-calibration - lab instruments do no meet the calibration required (frequency and/or standard) required by WADA.

All 3 of these normally leads to inaccurate results.

We all know what that means.
