I'm just gonna start changing my exercise profile to "trail running".

Should even give me some KOM spots, I hope. Some of those guys run pretty fast...

Some quick segment searches on Strava shows speeds of 75km/h in the botanical gardens section of the spruit trail WHAT!! I had to do a second take just to make sure I wasn't having a dyslexic moment! That deserves a WOW and nothing further!

One of the segments regularly gets road rides confused - check it's really inside the bg.

Years ago when we used to illegally ride table mountain on the full moon it was understood that if you loaded your ride on Strava it had to remain private. Needless to say, some guys ignored that and posted their illegal rides.

The numbers got our of hand and guess what? We can't ride table mountain on full moon any more.

10 years of tradition wiped out in a few months.

"Anyone that thinks it's okay to do 30+mph on multi use bike trails and record it for public consumption is a moron and a douche bag. I have tried Strava, found it dumb, and quit using it. It inspires people to be rude and dangerous toward other trail users. 100% of the people that use Strava long term are ashholes. You people deserve what you get."

I didn't say it.

Those guys probably have trolly surfing segments. I'm going to use Strava instead of waze from now on.

I have no problems with Strava.  I just use it as a tool to keep track of my improvements.  I don't ever go out to purposefully try ride one segment hard.  I ride as I normally do over my whole ride, and then upload to see where I improved and where I did not, and where I am struggling more than I should.  I then use this info to focus my training on the areas where I struggle.  It's not as though I will ever be close to top 10 on any segment.

Not sure if you read the article before replying?

I dont think its an issue of how to ride. I think there is enough evidence out there of the speeds that people are doing and irrespective of the majority that may be good citizens there will always be a knob.

Or even a guy who rides at 4 am to avoid the crowds when its pretty uncrowded.

But haters are going to hate and a record now exist of the speed a KoM was doing on a segment - any segment, and to get a KoM you may be going pretty quick. Even on N Farms some of the speeds on the downhill segments scare the cr@p out of me and I am nowhere near the top of the leaderboard.

So they go the evidence that the MTBers are "speeding" right there on Strava....

Not sure if your response was for me. Anyhow, I did read the article.

My experience has been that when walkers/runners/horse riders are 'blitzed' by mountain bikers who pass by at top speed, they become quite 'anti-mtb' and for good reason.

If we can all play (pass) nicely, no-one is likely to start investigating strava speeds...

Nail on the head!
