Hi All

I'm looking for 2 bikes male and female, we new to this and I'm not sure if the bug is going to bite, for that reason I really want go cheap and upgrade if necessary.

I don't wane spend more than R5000 for both bikes.

So do I just go to makro and buy 2 new bikes or is a second hand Titan or Medira a better option?

I don't mind buying 2 x 26ers, disk brakes would be nice

Buy second hand bikes. You never buy a makro bike. Not even for the gardener to commute with! Makro bikes are made from the heaviest material known to man.

A useful thing to know as newcomers to the sport, is that the bikes come in different sizes. Make sure you buy something that's gonna fit! How tall are you and the missus?

You could even look at renting bikes at bike parks to see if it's something you could get into.

Then decide what to buy, maybe you like it and want to up your budget a little for something worthwhile

Never mind the weight... the components are made from the cheapest most inferior materials available on earth.

It's actually a safety hazard.  Stay away, and look for second hand, rather look at renting the first couple of times, and decide from there...

Do park runs to get fit and save more, 5000 for 2 bikes is not a lot and you will not get anything decent.. so save more.

Also budget for cycling equipment, helmet, gloves, shirt, cycling bib shorts... and do not forget tools (saddle bag with spare tube, tyre levers and pump)

I see so many beginners at places like Northern Farms walking back from out on the trails to the car park because they have no spares to fix a puncture.

There is nothing more demotivating for a beginner than having a long walk back to the car

Wow great response thanks guys

OK I think I'll go and rent first and then take it from there

What is the best place in Pretoria to do a rent an trail?

Marco just watch out for scumtree and olx, both known to be very dicy. Have a look at the classifieds on bikehub as well, mostly 100% genuine sellers on here. Many hubbers in Pta, ask for help and advise if not sure, many people will be willing to help you.

I started off with a good old used MTB (Spez 26 with v brakes) and enjoyed it and took it from there.

My sister against my advice went to Makro and bought a yellow mtn thing that looked like a bike but weighed a ton. I warned her. The gears broke. She took it back for a refund. I found her a decent used mtb on the Hub instead much better.

As said above you'll also need money for a few things like helmet gloves shorts etc. Try get the best you can afford if you're enjoying the sport. I'd say 5k per bike if you can manage it, for something half decent to start off with.

Please post that link again I can't open it

I think I'm going with a medium Merida Juliet 26er for my wife

I find allot of male bike but the female bikes are very scares and sell quickly

Sounds like my first post a few years ago. Be certain of one thing, the bug will bite and you will wind up spending money on more bikes. that's just the way it works.

Enjoy your new hobby.
