Loose seat

Hubbers,

My effing seat keeps on loosening, at bolt where you set the seat angle. So on hard bumps the seat decides to point up or down. Its a Giant mtb seatpost.

Ive loosened, oiled and tightened the assembly, but still happens with time. Also learnt i need to really crank that bolt, but even that doesnt always help.

Any ideas? Surely loctite somewhere could help, but not sure where and how. Other option is just to oil again and crank till it creaks.

Help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

You sure that none of the bolts are stripped? also rider weight?

Picture of the seatpost would help.

Maybe a hardier seat post is needed, maybe one made for DH or AM?

I had a similar problem with a carbon Ritchy single bolt a few years back, which was a combination of rider weight and poor design in my opinion.

This is a pretty common issue with giant seatpost single bolt design. You need to overtorque the bolt quite significantly to stop this.

Happens a lot with single bolt seatpost. I had it on a Ritchey post, eventually ditched it.

Edit: thanks Gummi, long weekend!

Happens a lot with single bolt saddles. I had it on a Ritchey road saddle, eventually ditched the saddle

Why did you ditch the saddle if the post is the problem?

Maybe try without the grease, the more friction you have in the assembly the less chance it has of working loose. A small drop of blue threatlock on the thread should also help. Make sure to use the one marked 'removeable' though.

It's a Giant seatpost issue.  Giant seems to suffer more than others for some reason.  Yours is most likely stuffed and will need to be replaced.  I went through two Giant posts before getting something better.

If you strip yours down, and have a look at the bit that actually locks it to a specific angle (it's like a half circle) you'll see splines on it with corresponding splines on the seatpost part - I'd bet that your splines are stuffed / worn down / damaged which is not allowing them to grip one another resulting in your angle changing.

Twin bolt for the win.

As mentioned by others this is a common problem on some singlebolt system seatposts, especially the Giant post.

It is not so much and issue of the bolt not being tight enough, but more an issue of the bracket that bends slighly and therefore cannot hold everything tighly in place.

I would recommend getting a new post, you dont have to get an expensive one. Ryder have some cheapish ones that go for about R250.Althoug it is also a singlebolt post they seem to be sturdyer than the Giant one and has splines on the post and bracket that helps keep it from slipping.

Replace the bolt - it's about to break, and just loses tension as it stretches.

Had a similar problem with a Spez saddle and post .

Took it to Spez and they tightened it PROPER . About double what the torque spec was .

Sorted the problem .

Thanks for this - the whole assembly seems a bit unable to do its job effectively, given the forces involved. Upgrade looming.

Eternally, the options seem to be "ride it till it breaks", or "throw more money at it".

Thanks everyone. I will stubbornly proceed with the post until I choose to cast it off a cliff. On the bright side, it should teach me to be lighter on the bike.
