Morning Gents

Yesterday after finishing my ride at Meerendal  on my way home we came across a guy who had half his face ripped open to the point where you could see bare bone and sinuses .... Skin kept his cheek meat on his face.....NOT JOKING

He was a real trooper for carrying on trying to get home while half his face was ripped open but, we stopped him, called his wife and organised a lift with a fellow cyclist on his way out with his bakkie and got him to Durbanville mediclinic...

The Elderly gentleman with whom i chatted on the way out took control of the situation as i don't have the stomach for stuff like that.

My Question is :

How safe do you think it is to ride a Gopro camera type jobby on you handle bar???

The camera units all have mountings and brackets standing out with levers and tightening screws protruding which can easily hurt you if something had to happen. Even brake levers and handlebars have been known to go through limbs coming off your bike...

The only way this guy could have sustained a facial would like that is if his face hit the handle bar mount or the camera...

He claims to have gone through a corner and and fell!

Thanks to everyone getting this guy to safety and for everyone's input... Speedy recovery Bud!!

It's not safe. There are a multitude of accident scenarios where having the go pro on the bars can induce severe injury. Just slipping out of the pedals and hitting your chest on the camera can be fatal.

Assess the risks and ask your self is it worth it

I see some people mount them underneath the bars.

Use an under bar mount if you are worried about it. I have switched to handle bar mount from helmet as there seems to be issues with them being on your head too..

This is something I've definitely wondered about. I've never owned a gopro but when I did use one it felt much less alarming to have it under the bars. When I ran it ontop of my bars it was a huge distraction and concern. I'd definitely be interested in what others think since it so commonly said that having them on your helmet is bad but somehow having them on your bars is fine.

GoPro mounts will easily fold under impact if you go OTB. I know that for sure.

Its when its on your chest or helmet that you can create issues.

There are many things that can spear you on a bike - like brake levers which killed that kid in the Knysna forest, never mind that video of (I think) Cedric Garcia being speared in the groin on Reunion...

Like the man said - many other things much more dangerous. Like riding a bike over rocks?

We gonna need to take the handlebars off too because you can impale yourself.

We will also need to remove disk brakes because you will slice your leg open.

We will need to remove chainrings because you will get a noob scar on your calf.

We will need to make sponge pedals so they dont rip your shin.

I give up with this cycling thing, its too dangerous all these things that can injure me.

Please also dont forget to remove branches off the trees so that I dont get a branch in my face.

Please also remove rocks so that I dont fall and crack my head open when going over the bars.

This is what he he had on the bike... It was hanging loose at the time...

I've used that mount when I was borrowing a gopro from a friend. Its so weak that I reckon it would snap before causing any damage. Its the aluminium ones that make me nervous.

The more things sticking out from you bike the more the risk of injuriy increases (in my opinion).

The most dangerous thing sticking out from my bike is generally me...

One can become quite insane about all the dangers involved in cycling. Many "what-if's" to consider. Like Chukky said, if we want to remove all the dangers, we might as well stop cycling! Just get a couch!

Tumbleweed is also right, I am the mist dangerous thing on my bike!

I refuse to not cycle because of all the potential dangers. That is part of what makes it great! Overcoming life's obstacles.

Simply need to not be a dwis or a fool. Then get on your bike and enjoy it!

This is actually a big danger. What I mean is, I have seen places where trails have been cleaned and cut open. Most common tool is a bush knife, so what they tend to do with the smaller branches is just hack them off at the base of the tree, but they never check the part that is left behind. Happend to me at Hakahana, when around a corner and got stopped dead in my tracks. Looked down to find that a chopped of branch went straight into my knee pad. If it wasn't for my pads, I would have been in serious trouble.
