Next project is for some cabinets under and next to the built-in braai.

I plan to use birch ply for the carcasses and the African Rosewood for the doors / drawer fronts & side panels.

Which thickness do you suggest for the plywood?  15 mm / 18 mm?

Suppliers of plywood in Pretoria / JHB?

(I only used chipboard for previous cabinets but definitely need something better for this!)

I'd use 18mm ply because 15mm can be an issue when using hinges and screws as they want to push through the thinner board.

Try Eco Timber Traders. They have a JHB branch. I use their Durban branch and have only great things to say about them.

I plan to also use the ply for the drawers - nice way to show off some dovetails.

After the patio cabinets, I also have to build a TV cabinet...

And then a Murphy bed & full wall cabinet / cupboard for the study / multi purpose spare bedroom.  And finish a bathroom cabinet.  And two more kitchens for friends.  And some more pens for an orphanage...

And obviously some cycling as well as soon as the torn meniscus is properly healed...   :D

NICE. I still need to make the murphy bed for our spare room. At the moment the bed is flipped on its side. I think that's this week's project!

Think about putting some hidden casters under the TV cabinet. Biggest problem I see is dust and kiddie crap (Lego parts and marbles) gathering under our current TV cabinet, and the thing is such a schlep to move so that the floor can be cleaned underneath. Not only that, it will make it easier to fiddle with the cables at the back.

what oils/fluids y'all use to keep your hand tools, blades etc rust free? Any WD 40/ Q20 users?

What about jojoba oil?

after much reading, I use sewing machine oil to rub everything down.

but am likely to move to using a cloth that has a light covering of normal car oil.

after every time I am finished a project anc cleaning equipment, just give it a quick wipe

Thanks for reminding me about sewing machine oil, which i think is generically referred to as light machine oil.

Youtube gurus like Paul Sellers believe in their rag-in-a-cans: can stuffed with absorbant cloth and filled with light machine oil. He uses it as a roll-on for his tools.

Im still pretty new to turning but pens are a nice fun project and if you have some good wood scraps lying around then you can make some really awesome stuff. Would love to see some pics of pens you have done.

I put casters under certain furniture items when we got a cleaning service so that they could move them to clean. I really enjoy having the locking type on the tv stand and it was well worth the little bit of effort needed to put them on.

See some on this old post:

What I like about the pens are that they are quick.  Can finish one or two in an evening.  And the lathe is quiet enough not to disturb the kids & neighbors.

Where do you get the "pen bits" if you already have the wood?

http://www.mrwoodturner.co.za/    - They do all sorts of wood turning stuff.  I buy all my pen stuff from them.

You can also try these, but I never used them for pen stuff (have used them for other stuff, though):

Very nice! The lidded ones are a whole lot more tricky than the slimline and cigar ones and that first one looks great. I have never tried acrylics before, mostly been turning through the blanks I bought online from mrwoodturner. Im seriously thinking of getting a new lathe though, turning on a very old Rockwell at the moment and changing pulley speeds is a pain. Looking at the Nova comet II at the moment, looks like a good price vs performance midi lathe and I really dont need much bigger for now.

I replied to Grebel before scrolling down and seeing you already had.

mrwoodturner is great, I have also bought a Nova G3 chuck and pen mandrel from Strand hardware and they were also very good.

My father in law was in the store a few weeks ago when he was in PE and they have a great selection of turning gear.
