Go to youtube and look up triathlon taren. He gives some very good advice about triathlons. I found his swimming videos very informative and he also draws on his own experience

thanks for this, been watching all his videos now. If i have learned something from him is slow down on the swim you will go faster. It makes sense to me....

That makes me feel a little bit better about my chances although i'm sure my distances are a lot shorter than yours. I've had three swim sessions since joining the gym, 1st i did 1200m @ 2:06 /100m , second day 1500m @ 1:57/100m and this morning a poor 1000m @ 2:08/100m. However i can't do the turn kick off wall thing so i touch with my hands and then turn while my head is out the water and then kick of  again.

I did see a woman busy giving two ladies very basic lessons as it was their first time in a pool and asked her if they do technique coaching and they do. So will contact them and get them and book a session to look at my technique as i have never had anyone assess/coach me before and then i will take it from there.

Also do not tumble turn, whilst looks nice and sure will save some time on your CSS/100m.. am not going to be doing tumble turns in a tri (unless when being dumped on by the waves) :D ... for me is more about building distance, stamina and endurance... the swim is just the warm up and is the shortest of the distances and time frame.  Loosing 5mins on a swim you can easily make up on the bike and run leg... if you become strong in those disciplines.

Cool that you are going to get some stroke analysis and correction, will not only help with the swimming stroke, but also recovery through the stroke

Edit: and yeah I can go bat out of hell and be 1:47/100m over 100m but over 1.9km or 3.8km.... I prefer to pace, conserve energy and enjoy the swim and get into a comfortable rhythm  :)

Swimming also my biggest concern.  For me it is all about getting comfortable in the water, and increasing the time I can continuously swim.  No place for open water swims ( very dry in the north west), and only have a 15m pool to train in.

As for time spent training and training programs, due to other commitments and priorities, I find it hard to look at normal training programs.  As a guideline and a minimum, what would you guys suggest is the minimum time I need to spend swimming, cycling and running, to be able to complete my first ultra 70.3 (planning on Sun City in May)

I would recon 7-10hrs a week, how you split that is dependent on you as an individual.  If you are a good cyclist or runner then focus your time on the other disciplines.

i.e if you know you can comfortably cycle 90kms based on what you are currently doing then keep doing that and the rest of the time focus on swimming and running.

Try to do each discipline 2 preferably 3 times a week so that you keep building strength and endurance in the relative muscles.

Your aim in your first is to finish and learn from.

I will carry on my normal biking and work on my swim technique for next 2-3 months and then start the running bit. Seeing that I have 10 months to get ready I feel 8 months for the run should be OK.

should be aiming to get the swim down to around 16min for 800m. Won't be difficult if you your swim stroke correct and just put some training in

Hi Shaper, thanks a mill for the article, will give it a read for sure.  currently cycling is not to much of a concern, should be able to complete comfortably.  running is picking up slowly, need to do more brick sessions.  will focus on strength and need to do more swimming for sure.  cheers

I can swim, I cant run... that's life. one year at IM I was quickest in age group for the swim and slowest of the entire field (that finished) for the run.

rather run well than swim well if time is you goal. While one must swim the distance in the allotted time ones training time is better utilized on the cycle or run if gains are your goal.

agree. I've never done a 70.3 but I would also aim to just finish the swim comfortably without using too much energy and then aim to cycle and run well.

what is a okish time for completing the 1.9km swim?  I need to train to at least be able to swim for that 40 or 50 minutes...
