General question to those of you still swimming: are you training in a heated pool, or are you using a wetsuit? Or are you just hard-core? If the latter, what is the water temperature? I haven’t swum for 10 weeks since end-April and am wondering how/when to start again...

Heated pool which in the current circumstances in JHB is warmer than the outside temps. So just hop in and start swimming-swim anything over a Km and just get back into it, then just start building again.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have 2 small problems and hope you guys have solutions.

#1 I keep losing water bottles from my rear cages on the bike.Seems like it's only when they are full and tried using smaller bottles but makes no difference.Any idea to keep the bottles more secure.Profile cages on the rear.

#2 I have a Profile front hydration system and get loads of gas on long rides.I'm guessing it's from that first bit of air that you suck in.Any ideas to prevent this or should i just toss it and use normal bottles?

#1 I have used rubber bands to hold in bottle, tie to bottle cage and loop over bottle, when you yank the bottle out the bands break.  Empty bottles do not seem to be a problem in loosing, only full ones

#2 not had this issue, before riding I have a sip and it usually keeps the hydration straw full up to the bite valve for my next drink when out riding

Dont get me started on Front Hydration -I have used:

  • Profile
  • Thorhans
  • Speedfill
  • Vision

And each had a great feature and real bad design:

  • Profile-Spilled out from the Tube and Inlet. First Front Hydration system but was full of faults. That yellow spongy thingy.... :cursing:
  • Thorhans: Spilled out from the Tube.
  • Speedfill: Great bite valve and Inlet but what a mission to get Fluid in and you had to have serious mandibles to work that bitevalve-so great concept but hard to manage on the fly.
  • Vision: Leaked and the bottle didn't lock on the mount and went flying if you hit a bump.

So I think that its a hit and miss and I have ended up crafting my own hydration system from the Speedfill bitevalve and the best of the bottles.  Also got the Elite system so will see how that works-I have spent so much on this problem but there is nothing more irritating of supplement splattering all over the bike and you-makes me want to have kittens!

I've watched too many bottles falling out of those rear cages to consider getting one, looks very frustrating.

I bought the front bottle holders which sits between the tri bars. Xlab I think. I don't clip it on that often but it works just fine. Otherwise its the good old standard bottle holders for me - down and seat tube.

I'm looking at the Xlab Torpedo 200, is this perhaps the one you have? IF so would you recommend it?

This guy, any normal sized bottle fits in, only once when I smashed a speed hump has it popped out, otherwise its rock solid.

I have the X - Lab Torpedo 200. I made a carbon base plate for it and had an old gorilla cage so I effectively upgraded it to a 500. It works very well although the air inlet valve got lost during an early ride. I could have sought a replacement but it has two filling options one sealed and one has loose rubber flaps. I prefer the latter option so I don't need the inlet and I simply bunged it up with a drop of hot glue.

It works really well, its nice and stiff and doesn't leak much at all. I have a Speedfill bottle (for sale in the classifieds) which was a bit more bulky and the Garmin mount was further back. I really like the out front position on the X - Lab.

Had the X-Lab 200 (still in a cupboard), found it tended to bounce forward and out on rough roads if did not keep an eye on it.

Now have the X-Lab Hydroblade, which works ok, but have had a few leaks with splashing out the top fill cap.  Need to look at ways of keeping it more secure.

Only really use the out front hydration for 70.3's for full IM's will just use the downtube bottle and grab on the way.  Training, have bottles behind the saddle.

I use a Profile Design HC Bottle Mount with a standard Bottle Cage.

 Me too, works very well.

I use blackburn slick cages, never had a bottle pop out on my road or mtb.

(Obviously no tri-bars on my mtb)
