It’s a shame this is the same weekend as provisional date for the Race to Stanford.

Any guesses as to where in Cape Town this event might be taking place?

I'm struggling with the age old question, to buy a TT bike or not. I have a oldish but descent (2009 Raleigh RC7000) road bike with a Ultegra 10 speed. Not the lightest bike around but it works.

Only started doing triathlon last year, and did my first IM70.3 in Durban. Now the gogga has bitten me, and up next is the IM70.3 in Durban, IM70.3 in East London, and then the Full IM in PE in 2020.

I have tri bars on the road bike, and I have a really comfortable setup and my cycling times are not bad. Aiming for 2:50 bike in Durban and hopefully 5:40 overall.

Every fiber in me tells me that the TT bike will not make such a big difference, and to focus more on my running, but the N+1 in me just wants to buy a TT machine....

Any suggestions?

The age old question always has the same answer I'm afraid.... Open that wallet.

My mate did IM on an old Raeigh RC2000 with 3 x 8 gearing. No problem according to the brain.

However, according to the heart, just buy the TT bike cos you know ultimately you will

If you can afford it... N+1 !!

Will definitely save you time on the bike leg, if you need further convincing......

A proper fitting TT bike will also save your legs for the run.  You might be one of the lucky few who can achieve a reasonable fit with a road bike, but according to a bike fitter I used they are never as good as TT geometry. It matters less for a 70.3 but for full IM every little bit of additional pace will be appreciated.

So what should I look out for when buying a trisuit?  I assume I must be comfortable running in it...  The ones Ive looked at had zero chamois, just a little lappie?  Is that normal?

It is normal. But you'll be surprised how comfortable they are on the bike. My trisuit is better than any pair of cycling shorts I have. They obviously need to be thin so you can run without looking like a tool.

Try on some different brands, the fit can be quite different. They're also quite pricey, but if you look after it, it'll last forever.

Sleeveless v sleeves is personal choice, but after having both I'd suggest sleeves. For sunburn if nothing else.

Thanks.  I was looking at a Sailfish Spirit trisuit from cyclefo and it is priced very well, but I was worried about how it will feel on a bike :D

I have the Sailfish from Cyclefo, Its designed for a sprint and OD tri, not for a 70.3 or Full IM. HOWEVER i did do my first IM in it and paid the price dearly. IT's super comfy to run in though.

For now the goals are very modest, I want to do sprint at the end of the month, a 5150 in August and a 70.3 in 2020.  :)

I think Ill rent a wetsuit and take a chance on the Sailfish.  If I hate the sprint then I can still run and cycle in it... If I love my first tri, then my budget my need some rework...

If you looking to rent a wetsuit, speak to Terry http://xterrawetsuits.co.za/wetsuit-rental/
