Damn, I'm such a visually driven animal.....those pictures really got me drooling!

Quite a strange feeling being back on that mountain after so long - and without a bike. Some of the trails will feel just like they were - the ones where there were no trees before the fire. Its now wide open - you can see every rock sticking out for miles and no doubt who is riding what trail... Better views though, as you can see from the pics and winter will be less chilly on the slopes without trees. Summer will be a different story though.

Sounds like the Tokai District Riders Assoc. (horsey people) have given their tentative approval for the use of a postage stamp sized corner of their riding area. Seems almost unreal how much work is going into this, two months and a few different approaches to get the approval. The final nod will be given on Wednesday when they will attend a site visit to inspect the route. Thankfully all the fence and signage markers have been planted already showing our commitment to procedure to the T.

It must be said now, and later in official communication too, that people found riding where they should not is going to be an epic stuff up. Attitudes can stay at home as no correspondence will be entered into.

Ok, back to the good stuff. Reto joined me this morning for a track walk and a few slight changes to existing trails have been planned. Two reasons... best use of the slope and ground sensitivities.

When the snake trails were rebuilt after logging in 2013, the route was required to make better use of the contours for a sustainable future without protection provided by trees. Only problem was, with all the debris left by the loggers nobody could see the ground or know where the springs would be popping up. This meant that there were elevation gains in areas it was not expected and in two places the trail was sat in bogs. The changes will take both conservation needs into account and the best use of the slope (that we can see now) for an improved experience.

More info next week.

Thanks for posting pics Tim or some oaks may not have believed...

That sounds great. Very excited!

Exactly but I think he was referring to the disbelief that it takes place in a National Park. Maybe more unbelievable is dog walking but the cherry on the top has to still be that we can arrange a volunteer build day and 20 people can arrive at the gate of this National Park with spades!? There's a lot we need to be thankful for that is just not given a second thought. It's too easy to complain, # just an observation...

I think when Tokai eventually opens, somebody or somebodies will be needed to greet each rider and inform them about the rules which should be strictly adhered to.

Are we going to at some point look at number plates for riders? Identification is needed.

Yes. Maybe not for early access but in future, yes.

For early access; we have to fence-off jeep tracks, signage the hell out of every possible route and pay for marshals to be present to take abuse for pointing the way back out.

Ok, ok, I'm being overly dramatic, the abuse will be limited to only a small percentage of consistently unhappy people.

ja, it's a national park - but it's not the Kgalagadi wilderness.

mtbers, dog walkers, horse riders precede it being a national park.

Yep that is correct and is probably why these groups all still have access to areas they have traditionally used.

Deon bear in mind that next weekend sees a two day #Enduro at Welvanpas and I for one am planning to do one of the days - the one where the black route trails are raced. Some other potential builders may be in the same boat.

Well I for one would like to thank Deon and all the others on the Tokai MTB committee for all the effort and hard work in getting us to this point. I'm sure at times it must be a pretty thankless job and frustrating listening to all the moans and groans about the process taking so long but damn I'm sure it's going to worth the wait so huge thanks to all.

I must say that it's been mostly Deon & Mark these past few months, as well as Meurant as the Chairman of Table Mountain MTB Forum and AMARider that have headlined in this particular derby.

The rest of us haven't been able to put in nearly as much work as those 3 - and Mark & Deon through tremendous sacrifice.

THEY are the champions.
