Thanks for the replies but I forgot to ask:

I have heard mention that it is possible to put up to 4 people - not necessarily family - on one card. Is this true?

No, it works like this:

If 4 people go together, then they get it at a "family" discounted rate, which is a lot cheaper per each. They don't have to be family, so, I supposed it is called a group discount. The first card cost the normal price, the 2nd one less, the 3rd one less etc up to 4 people.. So, yes, get your mates and go together.

SANParks introduces Level 4 Activity Permit for weapons for TMNP

Due to the high levels of crime in certain SANPark areas we have introduced a new Activity Permit for self-defense weapons for the Table Mountain National Park.

This will allow visitors to legally carry a variety of weapons to defend themselves. The new Level 4 Activity Permit can be obtained at any of the 7 Sales Outlets for Activity Permits around the Cape Peninsula.

TMNP regional spokeswoman Merle Collins says: “There unfortunately has been a minor uptick in crime. We have tried to deny it, but it does not seem to be going away.  So we need to enlist members of the public to help us in the fight against this scourge.

President Ramaphosa’s budget cuts are not helping either.  SANParks now has an overtime freeze in effect, so our staff are only able to patrol Monday to Fridays until 15:30. Unfortunately a lot of recreational activities occur after that time or on weekends. Therefore it is now highly recommended that members of the Public apply for one the new Level 4 Activity permits in order to ensure their own safety outside of our working hours.

Below is a list of the different types of Level 4 Activity Permits that will now be available, and the respective annual fees.

Level 4A – Pepper Spray, Tazer, knife, panga and Paintball guns –  R100

Level 4B – Handgun (our recommended option) – R500

Level 4C – Rifle / Shotgun – R999

Level 4D – Attack dog, such as a pit bull, Rottweiler, German shepherd, Boerbull (owners must clean up after animals) – R400

Level 4H, (as in Heavy artillery) – FORBIDDEN this includes full automatic rifles, chainsaws, hand grenades (exceptions for hang gliders and paragliders after they have the training course)

Level 4T – Traditional weapons. e.g. Knobkierie, Sjambok, Spears, Bow and Arrows.  *Note that cricket bats are considered traditional English weapons. R99.

NOTES:
You will need to produce the actual firearm and corresponding valid South African firearm license in order to apply for Level 4B or C.

Please do NOT bring your attack dog for Level 4D application as this may make our staff slightly uncomfortable.

For rock climbers, we recommend handguns and sawed off shotguns. Knives and chainsaws are not advised for obvious safety hazard of cutting your own rope. For hang gliders, we recommend hand grenades due to their airborne effectiveness.

If you already have a Level 1 Activity permit for dog walking, you can upgrade to a Level 4D for the nominal fee of R200 per annum.

Note that these activity Permits apply only to TMNP. Firearms are prohibited in all other SAN Parks with Elephant, Rhino, etc. as you may be mistaken for a poacher and be subject to immediate arrest.

Thanks. The difficult part is synchronising with my cycling buddy.

You don't have to go together. Only one needs to go but with signed/filled in forms - 2 id photos and copy of id of all applicants. Phone the Tokai TMNP office for the details and cost.

On a different note (non-paperwork) note:

Mamba is running soooo sweet at the moment. Even with that in mind, I have no idea how the 41s KOM (shared between 4 guys currently) is being managed, much respect.

You may just find that the track was a tad smoother i.e freshly rebuilt when those times were set...

there's alot of GPS anomlies there, with "GPS drift" etc, there was a suggestion with the opening in 2016, to clear all segments and then recreate them. with the newest and latest bits

One of the 41s was set yesterday.

Mr Kelsey's original 41s was set in 2016. Actually, that middle rock garden was much gnarlier before it was filled in, so technically his time is more legit :whistling:

The current Mamba segment is the rebuilt one.

Lets face it, some people are just fast. That said, the GPS anomaly issue is real. On Monday I rode my wife's phone down in my pocket ( long story but she crashed and hurt her back - thanks again to Deon for the slow, gentle bakkie ride down)

Back to Strava - I posted a 12 second faster time on Vasbyt with my Polar GPS than her phone recorded. On Lizard my GPS was 3 secs faster than the phone.

Strava is not accurate and relies for its relevance on many users benefiting/losing out over time on the same segments due to the inherent inaccuracy in the GPS system it uses.

Hope she is doing fine and makes a full recovery.

Deon also "took me down with the bakkie" about two Sundays ago :whistling:

This is one of the reasons races don't use strava to record results.

I've bro trained down trails right on someones wheel and landed up almost 10 seconds 'slower' on Strava..

But now I no longer use Strava very much and if I do it's just to remind myself it's a silly way of getting caught up in a competitive side of social media that I am better off without.

Tokai is riding sweet as cherry pie at the moment. In fact, I might even go now quickly before the rain arrives and the missus gets home from work.....

Thanks, she's still very sore and has 3 cracked vertebrae but no other complications so she should be fine in a month or two.

I think we need to get Deon and Mark a helicopter.

I'm another one who got helped (evacuated really) off the mountain and to hospital by Deon (a few years ago now). Thanks again!

I know him well enough though, that I'm sure he'd prefer a great big yellow bulldozer or an excavator rather  than a chopper.

Shees , that is no joke - must have been quite some crash - hope she heals well and quickly.  Send my regards.
