Is it safe to carry items in the your cycle shirt pockets??

I fell pretty hard OTB (over the bars) a few days ago and landed on my back. Sadly not the first time this has happen...part of my learning curve!

Most of the damage to my lower back (mainly tissue bruising) seems due to the tool bag and phone I carry in my shirt rear pockets. Anything sharp or pointy could have done serious damage (note to anyone carrying tubeless puncture strip insertion tools in their pockets).

It's got me thinking about going back to a camel pack for hydration and keeping my tools in the bottle cage. A safer option in my case.

Anyone with similar experiences or suggestions (besides improving my riding skills)?

My tools are wrapped in old socks when I do an MTB race, sharp stuff is taped to my seat post.

I only carry my phone, energy bars and gels in my back pockets, everything else goes into tool bottle holder which I've mounted in a bottle cage on my seatpost.

Hi there Grey H,

The wearing of a camel pack is not lekker nor is it considdered "cool" but it is still the best option.

I'm thinking of the same. Just out of interest, my almost indestructible Motorola phone was toast after the fall. Another issue I would have faced if I could not ride back!

Its way cooler than a saddle bag.

There was an article where someone landed on Camelback and because of the stuff in it he alledgedly broke his back.

Fixed it for you...

The proxinmal cause may well have been falling off his bike....

But it is true that landing on hard stuff hurts - whether it is in your pocket or on the ground... this is the result of landing on a bomb in a pocket - the rock underneath it also had something to do with it...

Riding exclusively on foam rubber courses will also reduce injury rates. Not to zero though, there's always that one guy who could break his finger off in his own poephol.

A friend went OTB at the bombhole on the spruit, below Old Parks. he had a multi tool in his back pocket which was in the wrong place. Spinal fusion was the result and no more mnTB for him plus months of pain.

I shared the one about the guy in the uS who broke his back with a shock pump and other things in a Camelbak.

So hard things in camelbaks are not great ideas.
