More Rogue Riding on Tygerberg MTB Members Only Trail

Mob mentality is something that only happens in groups!

Whilst these 2 chaps clearly are punks, because of their behaviour going off the trials and riding through the vines, which is the real issue and what everyone should be getting their knickers all tied up about, ask yourself this question.

At what point in your riding did you dress like these two chaps are dressed and approach riding the way they clearly are? Yep almost on your first few rides! They are complete noobs!!!! No one who has ridden with anyone who vaguely rides regularly would let their mates ride like this. Chances are they have even less idea about what was involved in securing land access....

Every situation needs to be handled with the end goal in mind. What are you hoping for from interaction with these two riders? That they never come back to these trials, or that they adhere to the rules and become members? When you know which result you are looking for your approach should match the goal!

Can't quite figure out what you're getting at but in this case the bit in red wouldn't be a disaster. We can do without fellow riders who blatantly ignore the rules.

it's really irritating that in a country like SA with it's rampant lawlessness and a general attitude of "F#$% everyone else, my needs are most important", when people get caught breaking the law, the first response of a lot of people is to look for an excuse.

The first response should be zero tolerance.

True, no one is arguing against that. What's being discussed is how do you approach zero tolerance?

Honestly, these guys look like Bill and Ted that used mountain bikes to go smoke boom up the mountain. Not like some mountain bikers that intentionally bypassed paying to go riding.

nobody bitching on here has mentioned anything about them paying/not paying. The issue is it's a members only trail. 'Members only' is not some arbitrary rule sucked out of the club's collective thumb. It is a land owner request.

First just to put into context, I'm on the committee and also assist with marshaling

on a lighter note, stripping rogue riders of their kit may be a better deterrent than steps 1-10 below

The club has been handling discipline diplomatically where possible. Most people are apologetic and many take out membership following incidents and it is great where everybody walks away a winner. Where it comes to members disregarding the rules (such as taking friends with no bike boards, riding off the trails, ...), it is handled on a discretionary basis by the committee. I agree however with our marshals sentiments that there are instances where the gloves must come off - particularly where people are rude and abusive (chances are they'd behave in the same way when encountering a land owner and we don't want people ruining our sport's reputation like that).

Thanks Rapunzel! There's the right response and clearly the reason you're on the committee! Yes, you wont walk away from EVERY encounter with both parties being a winner, as life is simply not like that, but YOU HAVE TO give it an opportunity to be that, before you fight fire with fire and boot people out.

Who will be the most ardent supporters to ending rogue riding on TMBT in future? The crew that have been turned from rogue riding through meaningful interaction.

No one comes back from a lynching and feels welcome irrespective of how ignorant they were in their original failing!

take step back. Remeber that we didn't have all the info at the start of the thread. Now consider this:

You and your family happily live somewhere in the middle ages. Then out of nowhere some priest labels your daughter a witch. No proof is provided. Should we all jump on the bandwagon and go burn her at the stake? Or should we have a fair trial?

We should see if she holds a Witch's Guild certificate in her petticoat. If not, all clear. If so, or if she has a sneaky garter with cyrillic inscriptions on it, BURN HER!

Totally joking, of course. Gosh, this implied sarcasm lark is tiring. Comic sans, Myles. Comic Sans.

This is an issue but a separate one. The reason the land owner wants this is because he wants the club to govern itself and adhere to the marked trials only and stay off the other parts of his land, which is his biggest issue!

This is the part that needs to be addressed first. Members need to ensure that they guard the lock info and don't pass it out as then the internal governance breaks down. The club needs to focus on keeping a united approach from its members. It will be the only way to get everyone working together, but do it in a dignified manner!

The overwhelming majority of law breakers are idiots! It is not worth sinking to their level as they will only beat you up with experience!
