Reb Bull TV - XC Rob Walnut

Hello all,

As much as I love watching UCI XC on Red Bull TV, I would like to take the opportunity to winge about ex-downhiller commentator Rob Warner ....

I just don't think he puts in the time to be on top of the game in terms of what's going down in XC, and blags his way through the broadcasts. Good that Bart is helping out, because he is the salvation.

For example, today they are talking about hard tail vs softtail and why oh why is  Yo!landa is riding a hard tail, whilst just this week Yo!anda put out a video about the equipment she uses, if he was following her on the Tweeter (as he should be) he would be able to comment on that. In this case she explains that she likes the hard tail, its fast in the climbs and thats what she wants to stick with. He should certainly take the time to keep up to date with what these athletes are putting out.

Then last week, at the Worlds, he talks about the rider from 'Rhodesia'  during the Mens Elite Race !!!! That wasn't a joke, he just seems out of contact with the world at large. Perhaps too much in the pub.

Winge Over.

Otherwise, thanks Red Bull TV. Life wouldnt be the same without you.

Really?

In the freecaster days when Rob could say whatever he wanted that was some of the funniest and best commentary i've ever heard. His brilliant DH commentary probably had a lot to do with the success of freecaster and ultimately what we now have on red bull today. So if you're looking for a saviour, it's Rob Warner.

He's definitely had his wings clipped since Red bull took over freecaster (I'm aware of the irony) but he still makes the event really exciting. He's got genuine passion for the discipline and it comes across in his commentary. Maybe his depth of knowledge in XC is not as great (because he doesn't stalk yolanda on twitter) but I think it's a nice balance to have one guy to get you amped up (Rob) and then Bart with the more technical input.

It would be pretty sterile and dull without him in my opinion.

Yip. I share the sentiment. I enjoy them both.

I enjoy his commentary as well.  granted he can be a bit annoying at times.  The fact that we can actually get to watch it far outweighs anything else though.

But we usually get a good giggle with Bart's pronunciations, moody, boompy, roof rudes...

Bart's best one is when it is duuusty :w00t:

And boy he hates the duuuuust, amazing that he actually rides the Epic with all that duuuuuust

Rob and Bart are OK, they are like every South African "Rugby Analyst" just has-beens trying to earn a living.

This new Hayley woman should really focus on her baby and leave commentary to others.

She is by far the worst of the 3....sounds annoying, states the obvious, and can't complete a sentence. Very awkward to listen to and watch.

Ag they don't bug me...a lot of it is to educate the viewers, not all viewers know everything, and Bart is at least informative when it comes to all things xco, I actually think Bart gets annoyed with Rob a lot, cause he asks the same questions every time.. Same way I think Claudio gets annoyed with Rob with the DH

And plus most of the time I am watching more than 1 cycling event so I end up turning the sound down on both

I actually don't mind the commentary, although Warner does at times come across as a tad out of touch with the latest developments in the XC and DHI scenes in terms of new tech and so on.

It's a bit cringey when he talks about dropper posts as if though they have just been invented.

At the end of the day, we're getting the opportunity to watch the races for free, so there's no reason to complain.

All of you have forgotten his obsession with the angle of Kulhavy's seat.

it is VERY unique, you must admit.

I reckon it's because he has such long legs, and a shorter torso. His front end is also just so darn low, so the angle is necessary to relieve pressure on the gonads. Also provides a platform to push back on during seated climbing.

Very unorthodox, but it must be like that for a reason. MADA3400 here also has an angle like that, cos his seat is so damn high relative to his bars.

Hello all,

*** commentator Rob Warner ....

That oke is a door knob, he boils my piss when he opens that gob of his and talks ***.

I rather mute the TV and listen to Ukhozi FM or Lesedi FM, which makes more sense to me than the manure he speaks.

Then theres that useless Hayley field reporter, saying stuff that we can see!!! I mean for crying out loud, is she red bulls speaker for the visually impaired?

Rant off, let monday commence peacefully

Anyone complaining here needs to listen to the Red Bull Rampage, X-Games or Crankworx commentary.  You'll realise what we have in Rob Warner and Claudio and Bart.

Depends, it has is up and downs  ...  Cam Mc Caul who has been on as co-host mostly is great, being an ex-top dawg and comes across well.

Rob .. ultimately can't really complain, its just a winge that he could just be a bit more professional and do his home work in terms of the athletes and tech, never mind his knowledge of the world at large.

Guys what you need to remember is that ... especially for the XCO which lasts an hour and a half - focus is generally on Nino in front, then Nino in front, then someone puncturing ... and Nino in front ....

So as commentators Rob and Bart have instruction to talk about different aspects of the event and bike technology during to race to keep things "current" and informative - they have a check list of what needs to be "discussed" and this is utilised in the event of someone puncturing ... or Absalon dropping his post etc.

Remember that as the sport grows and we get a wider viewer network globally, not everyone watching will be totally familiar with tubular vs tubeless vs tubes .... or what on earth a dropper post is ...

So these are meant to be informative for the wider spectrum of viewers.

When we had the world cups here - I had to spend an hour or 2 with Rob making notes about the track etc for the broadcast.

We even did specific tv  track walk with Red Bull to set up viewing positions and discuss points on the track that could be important so that he was prepped for the broadcast.

The amount of work he and Bart / Claudio put into the broadcasts is insane - so to be honest I think that even though he makes the odd bugger up - they are pretty good commentators. I would like to see anyone else with a broader knowledge than them ... as at least they have all raced at world cup levels in respective disciplines so they know the ins and outs of the world cups.

Also - if you compare them to Supercyclings hosts and their lack of knowledge about anything other than marathon ... IMO Rob and them do a fantastic job
