That's interesting to know - Wow - your folks are machines - clearly a cycling family across many generations.

Looking into the history I see 3E didn't exist before last year - I think I'm going to line up near the front of 3E and go my hardest for the first 3k and then see who's around me. I'll also warm up by riding to the start and keep stretching and moving while waiting in the chute.

Target is 3:29:00.

You are a bit fitter than my folks and they did a 3:25 last year. So aim for that!!

I still think that sometimes - on the MTB one starts getting unhappy when it's 20 percent and covered in loose rocks and stones.

First Argus I did this climb on my mtb thinking - "what are these roadies on about? Suikerbossie is a breeze..."

I omitted the bit that after that climb the road flattened and instead of descending down to Llandudnu the actual Suikerbossie climb curled up ahead

As long as you come back with the mandatory "I did a sub 3 on my 29er WITH knoblies" thread after the event. We LOVE those threads. It fills us with such admiration and a sense of awe.

Only thing that beats that is starting in 2 something and doing it.

But as it is a road race I suggest you go ride this weekend and leave next weekend to the guys who have the decency common sense to turn up on the right bike.

Road is open to all my friend. Hold your line, I will hold mine and stay clear.

I will be on knoblies in 1B :D .

Just looking on strava now, A few segments up there. Which one are we comparing?

Suikerbossie(South Side)

Suikerbossie 1.1km Interval

Savage Suikerbossie South Sprint        (I wonder who named that one???)

Thats the only one that really counts. :)

Rather sit in the top 40 spots till Smits Winkel, then stay with the acceleration there. There is more to be gained with fresher legs on Chappies and Suikerbossie than a fast start up the  N2.

I'm curious, where did you loose your group in your previous attempt and what do you plan to do differently this year?

Not impossible on knobblies but very rare, good luck.

If you do that from 3E I will eat my hat.  :whistling:

Last year 3:29 would have got 29th place in 3E. Great conditions of course but you never know!!

I'll be happy with 3:40 and will settle for anything under 4 if it's windy.

What kind of hat is it Moridin - something nice a chewy I hope?

Think I lost my group coming down Smitswinkel last year, did not concentrate..and also the first time riding the CTCT route, so this was all new. Ran a 36T oval (1x11), might do 38T (round) this year - still deciding. Managed a 3:07 on the mtb so sub 3 def. possible.

What kind of cadence do you have to do to get to 40kmph?

Billy Stelling has done a few. If you have the inclination to go through old threads you might a few more braggards really decent mountain bike riders telling us how tough nice they are as they rode on knobblies.

Ideally on a MTB you want a fast split to Smits and a little slower after that. Which goes against the recent trend of slower to Smits and flat out after that.

The fast descent from Smits does huge damage as if the rider a few places in front of loses the wheel it's all over. Pace is too high to make up the difference once the elastic snaps.

On the tandem I reckon we'll be pushing 70kph down there and probably 80kph just after the Red Hill left to Scarborough. No way a 1x system can keep up with our 52x10.
