So there is a slim chance I might be heading state side for a little Holiday Orlando area.  Been looking at a few bike shows and it seems we are way way cheaper than them on parts.  Can it be?

Dura Ace 11 9000 ST levers.  Here R7k  over there R12.7k  anyone else experienced this?  Thought i was gonna be saving some bucks "importing parts" in my bag. Turns out not so.

Maybe I have just been looking at the wrong stores.

There is a very big problem with Shimano pricing in the US.

Shimano USA's pricing is out the window, so much so that a lot of shops try to stay away from Shimano and only use SRAM or order from the EU retailers and ship it over and its still cheaper. Eg; They can buy a cassette from chain reaction for less than what Shimano USA cost is.

so this is the reason why CRC don't sell Sram to us anymore

Not entirely more a factor of Cape Cycle Systems putting pressure on SRAM Int. to stem the flow of grey imports into SA and then SRAM Int. putting pressure on the EU distributors to stop supplying shops that sell to SA.

It happened with a bike manufacture who was selling parts to CWC on the side, the parts manufacture found out and terminated supply contracts with the bike manufacture for breach of contract.

Shew so must do some proper homework then. May turn out cheaper to buy from Chain Reaction and ship it here than buy in Murica.  Oh well at least I have something to do today

I recently looking to see if it would be worth having some parts shipped locally within the UK and then bring them back to SA.... Nope.

You pay a higher price for delivery in the UK (ie. pay their VAT) and run the risk of having it damaged in your luggage.

Cheapest way to get things at the moment seems to be to check CRC and Wiggle, and switch between the various currency options (I found wiggle.com.au to be cheaper than wiggle.co.uk a for a while, but may have been an anomoly) and still have it shipped to SA. Pay shipping and the VAT here and you come out pretty close to the same price as the UK price including the free delivery.

I buy in the USA often but you need to know your prices as you may not be getting a bargain.

Buy a whole bike off Ebay and bring it back, ensuring it has the components you want. then take what you want off (groupset, wheels etc) and sell the rest on the hub.

Works for me.

I often leave with an empty bike bag and get the ebay bike delivered to my hotel....

Bikes on Ebay are pretty cheap if you work cleverly

It's not just us, spoke. It's a global thing. SRAM putting new agreements in place to ensure regional stuff gets routed through each area's local distro centre. It's all over Pinkbike - people from every country outside the EU not being able to order ANYTHING SRAM from CRC. I suspect Ze Germans will follow suit as well.

Probably a result of all the registered distros saying that they want to be the sole supplier to that particular country.

As a side note to this, I have heard through the grapevine that certain shops will have preferential treatment from the distributor and that you LBS may not be able to get stock and you will have to go to these shops.  i.e if a new part is released it will be given to these certain shops first and only weeks later if there is surplus stock it will be given to other LBS.  It will also be applicable to everything including new bikes etc.

If true, that would be absolute BS. Like shimano, essentially requiring a large order cos they won't let you order piecemeal.
