I think this is what the OP was referring to:

I've seen plastic 'cups' a few years ago at the Argus expo. They clipped onto your helmet straps and supposedly reduced the wind factor around your ear, without closing up the external auditory canal. Wrapping a buff around your head is good for keeping the ears warm, but muffles the noise as well. With less wind noise you should get earlier warning of vehicles approaching from behind.

They had them at the argus expo a few years ago. The were molded to hold a headphone earpiece as well. That way you had the music in but still also had peripheral hearing.

Been looking for them for a while now as well as I lost mine.

Yeah - wouldn't wear those for love or money. They look like awful sideburns..... That's a no vote I'm afraid.

Cycling as we all know, is about image.

That little muff patch on the side of your head is going to get you into big trouble. Really.

Well in doing a clean out, look what I found, the originals, last used at the desert dash 2009, and put into storage (aka I could not find them).

But I hauled them out of storage (that is found them). Looked at the name on the side and the company is a local one in Durbs (apparently) and I have sent them an email to see if I can get another set.

What I really like about them, other than the obvious job of keeping wind out the ears, is the insert for speakers. That way the inserts are not in your ears and you still have "peripheral hearing". Comes in handy at 03H00, when the sleep monsters come knocking.

They are called slipstreamz and can be found here:

Out of interest....why?

Why do you think the wind noise is so bad that these things are warranted?

I've been around the block and done stupid speeds on the bike and never has wind noise bothered me.

So this to me is very strange.....

Two and a half things spring to mind spidey.

The first is when you are riding you get wind noise , and then add some more noise because you are riding into the wind. Then say you have this for like 8 hours in your ears, and now its 02H00 in the morning and you have been on your bike for 8 or more hours. It becomes like that tiny buzzing whining noise in your ears. Its fine for a while, but then it starts to drive you crazy. Also I like the quiet. Basically its hard to describe.

The other is that I dont like speakers directly in my ears. And these carry them outside your ear so you can still hear the music or person reading (audio books) without additional wind noise.

And the half. A buff might solve the problem, but I dont like buffs. And I have not had these on since 2009. We will see how it goes after s2c.

possibly its the "you can add headphones to them" is why you don't see them around

its very un-pc to mention headphones and cycling in the same sentence

admittedly this is from 2009. And they were worn in the desert between Windhoek and Swakop
