Please be considerate in the Cradle (and everywhere else)

Seeing that the other thread got deleted, I thought I would repost this, as our behaviour in the Cradle needs to be addressed.

We need to do what we can, I saw it a few times over the weekend, where drivers are getting gatvol of us.

I rode through there on Saturday and its terrible. Riders 4-5 abreast, u-turns without looking, swerving, the normal stuff.

I ride with the Lab sometimes, but I have stopped riding in these club rides, as it seems that once you have more than 5 cyclists in a group, we seem to grow some sort of entitlement complex, and I can see how those massive groups must be a real pain for any other road user, including other cyclists. Dear all people who ride in club rides: Riding in a large group doesnt absolve you of taking resposibility to ride like a normal human being, you are still accountable for your own actions, so dont ride like a chop. ( I hope that knob who was on the wrong side of the road coming over the Lion Park bridge reads this)

Look, its 947 time, and that means that there will be more cyclists (golfers) coming out of the woodwork. This means those of us that are aware, should be even more aware and vigilant about the locals, just as they need to understand that 947 is their silly season.

- Be considerate.

- Ride 2 abreast INSIDE the yellow line.

- Thank drivers who show some patience.

- If you stop, move off of the road.

- Slow down for the traffic circles.

- Don't wait for your mates within traffic circles.

- Don't park your bike on the kerb stone within traffic circles, and expect it not to fall into the path of a fellow cyclist.

- If you overtake a fellow cyclist, try not cut in too early and tap their front wheel.

- Don’t simply turn into Bidon/SomethingCountry without looking first.

- And for god sake, don’t stop in the cycling lane to look at the tigers.

Cyclist and Cradle residents need to show some mutual respect to each other, and this can only happen if WE start behaving.

If you are in the wrong, simply acknowledge it and apologise. If you are riding in the middle of the road and somebody hoots at you, reacting like a knob will NOT help the situation.

Please be a positive contributor to the perception on cyclists. We will ALL benefit from it.

I agree with the sentiment of the OP, but would like to point out one problem. Where cycle lanes are provided, cyclists may not cycle in the remaining portion of the road. So cycling abreast is also then not practical, as it leave no room to overtake. See rule 7.

Rules of the Road & Riding on pedal cycles

Reg 311.

(1)        No person shall ride a pedal cycle on a public road unless he or she is seated astride on the saddle of such pedal cycle.

(2)        Persons riding pedal cycles on a public road shall ride in single file except in the course of overtaking another pedal cycle, and two or more persons riding pedal cycles shall not overtake another vehicle at the same time.

(3)        No person riding or seated on a pedal cycle on a public road shall take hold of any other vehicle in motion.

(4)        No person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall deliberately cause such pedal cycle to swerve from side to side.

(5)        No person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall carry thereon any person, animal or object which obstructs his or her view or which prevents him or her from exercising complete control over the movements of such pedal cycle.

(6)        A person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall do so with at least one hand on the handle bars of such pedal cycle.

(7)        Whenever a portion of a public road has been set aside for use by persons riding pedal cycles, no person shall ride a pedal cycle on any other portion of such road

I wrote a long reply about how i had experienced consideration in the Cradle on my ride yesterday and how it blew me away in reply to ther other string

So long in fact that in the interim the thread was closed. So now I have a meeting and the whole thing went in to the ether.

Agreed sir.

Your sentiment exactly.

I was helped by 2 x development riders who had no other agenda than concern for my safety and well being after a puncture. It seems like the Saturday night beer bottle tossing in the cycling lane in the cradle has gone in to overdrive, so I was a victim. And they stopped to help me and ensure I was safe even after they worked out i was okay they stayed until all was fixed.

Really made me think that I needed to be more considerate and accommodating myself as I don't really enjoy all the noobs wobbling around the cradle either. I ride there every weekend, so its my local track.

We need to help them and bring them in to the fold, not alienate them...

Adult cyclists need to be told this? *SMK*

Apparently some adults enjoy being idiots. So yes, on occasion it actually does become necessary for people to be reminded to be polite and act decently. In my personal experience I have found that generally people actually respond better to politeness rather than gruffness/rudeness. Except the idiots of course.

Adults, grown-ups, being reasonable human beings, and being conscious of the opportunity to improve one's behaviour don't always arrive in the same pair of bib shorts at the same time......cyclists or not.

Anyone noticed that when your mates don't cycle they tend to love telling you about the muppet cyclists all over the road that morning and how we cant maintain a straight line to save our lives etc etc.... Like we know each and every cyclist personally and can inform them of the gripes....!

When they do that to me, I start complaining to them about all the bad car driving. :whistling:

I have not been in the cradle, but am planning to travel thru there on Saturday morning by car. Hopefully I can report back from a motorists perspective that the cyclists rode savely........????????

If you have a passenger, take pics of the guys and come post it here.

I will be riding with a GoPro this weekend for exactly this reason.

Not to name and shame, but rather to illustrate what we shouldnt be doing.

I think i may have been in the batch over that bridge, we had a guy in red bibs who had joined our group, rode out wide over the bridge, laughed it off and then proceeded to duck in-between bikes later on nearly causing me to brake very hard. Was really relieved when he could not hold on to the group. Was dangerous more than just at the bridge.  Case of his lack of talent only being exceeded by his ignorance and arrogance.
