agreed, apart from the last 9km yesterday, what are they resting from?

they're just showing how italian they can do things.

15% of the race down, let's chill. (they're going from sardinia to sicily, which involves a 350km Ferry trip, Cagliari to Porto Trapani) and then it's 100km to Cefalu) - assuming my google maps skills are good.

BUT it does mean that there could be muchos fireworks tomorrow.

Rohan Dennis crashed and is out of the Giro

Must've missed it somewhere

Was it broadcasted at all?

That'll dent BMC's GC chase.

was with all the echelons forming, and the confusion created.

so TJ is in the mix all of a sudden again, with a half decent backup squad

I just read now that he got switched and his left wheel taken out with no chance of avoiding a crash

The (official) race website shows a plane for the connection between Cagliari and Palermo...  :whistling:  :D

Very precious cargo on that 1 little plane

The busses will have to drive.........

Hard work being a bus driver...

You hit one wall, almost run over a cyclist or get stuck under a gantry and you make headlines. :P

Not that hard really, dont hit stuff.

And if the bus doesn't make it then the team can continue resting

I bet there are no bus drivers from Africa - any body ?

thanks, ja i was talking more about the buses/bikes - the riders are easy to get around using planes! (oh, and it looks like the ferry is only on fridays too!)

last year they had 3 days in holland, then a day's break/travel time to italy

if I compare to - 2014 TdF, they started in yorkshire, had a stage in london, then got on the (much shorter) ferry to Calais and didn't have a break.

2013 - they started on corsica with 3 stages, then ferried(200km) back to mainland to do a TTT in nice - no break.

98 - 3 stages in ireland, stage 4 in brittany, no break (that must have been a big drive for the buses!)

Sardinia looks like a beautiful island, the coastline looks perfect for some good diving, I have been to Sicily and dived off the coast there, its beautiful but not much fish life in the areas I dived. Sicily is also very much more developed than Sardinia appears to be, I see only about 1.5 million people live there.

This is the beauty of starting in new and different areas, the geography is almost more enticing than the event and the awareness it creates must be huge.

Its interesting in that some years ago I read they worked out that Soccer and Formula 1 bought the most tourist potential to a country, but looking at the people lining the streets in Sardinia they appeared to have supported well and obviously enjoyed the spectacle.

I don't think today is a rest day, its a transfer day. You need to have at least 5 days of racing before a rest day and a transfer day is not automatically a rest day...but can be. Enough admin.

Can someone kindly explain to me when Rohan Dennis became a GC contender for the Giro?

That's why I used Comic Sans - comment made with a bit of humour rather than to correct you.

Edit: and I'm sure they would charter a few ferries to get the whole convoy across.

When TJ was signed as the Leader and Porte was given the TDF position. I mean we all know TJ is going to go belly up after the 2nd rest day.

IIRC correctly, a rest day is required after 9 days (max) of racing, rather than a minimum number of days before they can take a rest.

Either way, today IS probably just a transfer day.
