Am I the only one seeing Nicholas Roche being talked up every year and then never living up to that hype around him? I was a fan of his father, especially after that one stage in 87? finishing on La Plagne, where he ended up seconds behind Delgado only to collapsed, off to hospital for recuperation and raced the next day to finally win his only TdF.

I feel the same about Taylor Phinney.

Maybe I don't know about him (personality or achievement wise), but a lot of hype seems to surround him. I don't 'get' him. But maybe that's just me.

Having said that, he has made a great recovery from that hectic crash 2 years ago and has the scars to prove it...

Aah Okay, fair enough, I was still stuck wondering what Astana were thinking.

I remember that epic stage by Stephen Roche. It was in that year that he won the triple, the Giro, TDF and World Champs.

Interesting story about Stephen Roche winning the Giro was that his team mate was Italian and also had a chance to win. The Italian crowd was so partisan that they were trying to knock Stephen off his bike on the climbs. His other team mates had to ride next to him on either side to protect him.

Another trivial piece of information was that on one of the major mountain descents Stephen said his bike felt a bit strange and wasn't handling properly. He mentioned this to his Italian team mate who promptly attacked Stephen. After the stage Stephen was informed by his mechanics that he had been riding on a broken fork

I just can't cheer for a team that's name sounds like my morning constitutional. Ah... Zhuuugh... Duuugh... AAARRRGGH. And they say French is a romantic tongue.

Remember previous years when the breakaway would have 20 or 25 minutes on the Group some days?

Ya, how Thomas V got into the yellow jersey and kept it for ... more than a week?

"... In the ninth stage of the 2011 Tour de France, Voeckler led a breakaway, and crossed the line second, taking the overall-time lead and therefore wearing the maillot jaune. He held on to the yellow jersey daily from the beginning of Stage 10 onwards, carrying it through all the Pyrenean mountain stages and into the Alps, but he was unable to retain it at the end of Stage 19, the queen stage finishing at Alpe D'Huez. Voeckler finished in fourth place in the GC, 3min 20sec behind the winner, Cadel Evans."

This is where race radios make me roll my eyes

As the roleurs start to chip away at Bodnar's lead as they get the news from their respective DSes

Imagine a Grand Tour with stages 3, 7, 13, 16 and 19 designated as a race without race radios

And ample responsibly trained motos for safety watch
