HI

I'm looking at Hydration Packs for under R400 and a Pack cleaner with a pipe cleaner at a Budget price..

Lizzard has new Hydration packs for under R400

http://www.lizzardonline.com/85-hydration-backpacks

Any walk in shops at around that price range near Cresta ?

And i really don't want to spend R250 at Sportsman Warehouse Ripoff... for a hydration pack cleaning set,any ideas ?

You can always get a pipe cleaner and a clothes hanger instead of the SWH set. I also did that when I was a student. Now I have that exact set and every time I clean my bladder I'm glad I have it.

Water and water only and dry it out with one or 2 of those white holey golf practise balls inside to keep it open or some people just store it permanently in the freezer, probably the best option if you use it often.

I use either Milton tablets  or Jik to clean my hydration pack bladder.

If you use Jik, use the regular one, unless you like hints of lavender in your water! I use a strongish solution. Half fill the bladder, add around 50 to 100ml per litre, fill bladder to brim, close and mix. Then release a bit to get the solution down the pipe.

Leave for around 30 mins, rinse and hang to dry.

Just rinse it out with water after your ride (not a week later) and put the bladder in the deep freeze. No funk grows at below zero.

you did notice that none of these lizard... backpacks come WITH a bladder

the bladder is extra

if you going to buy online buy from someone trustworthy

buy something good and only put water in it and don't waste money on noob cleaning equipment

try this :

take your 400+ and the 200 you would have spent on a cleaning kit and you bang on the money (more or less)

Check that the hydration pack comes with a bladder, they don't always.

I got one from Mr.Price sport for R250 with a bladder a while back which is alright.

Managed to get a Dakine 3L and a Camelback on the classifieds each for under R350.

^this, mine lives in the freezer, gets rinsed after a ride and dumped into the freezer until the next time its needed.

Best way to dry the bladder is to crumble a kitchen paper towel into a ball. Close the lid and blow the bladder up through the tube.

Shake the bladder and the paper towel does the rest. Repeat if there is still moisture in the bladder.

Remove and store until needed.

Bacteria loves moisture, so keeping it dry is better.

The freezer thing is a cool idea, but certain bacteria can hibernate and carry on breeding at room temperature.

A teaspoon of unscented bleach + 1L of water is more than enough to kill bacteria and not leave you with that horrible taste. Anymore is an overkill and wasting bleach.

I just wanted to thank you for the heads up. Didn't know Lizzard made this stuff.  Been looking for a replacement backpack for months. Something I could just use my own bladder with. My camelbak has always been a compromise and upgrading to a bigger pack with all the features I wanted usually costs triple what I paid for this. I was still indecisive until I saw the fullface helmet kangaroo pouch. R360 and free shipping? Sounds like a deal to me.

I'll let ya'll know if this thing falls apart quick enough to justify the price.

Oh, and I throw anything liquid in my bladder. From water to chicken soup. I just rinse it after rides with Purity's baby bottle sterilizing fluid. Cheaper than Miltons. No need for a brush or cleaning kits or any other nonsense. Just sterilize rinse fill repeat. I keep it in the fridge at all times too. Whether its filled or not.
