Hi All,

So this weekend I plan on buying my first MTB. I have narrowed it down to 2 options that I can get at the same price.

The Reba fork on the Silverback is significantly better. Both bikes are reputable brands. I did a test ride on the 2016 XT Merida with a view to setting it up for some dirt road touring because it has lugs for attaching rack/panniers. I liked the way it rode and was immediately comfy on it. Have not tried the Silverback yet. Ride both and if the Silverback is at least as comfy as the Merida then go with the Silverback.

Its a bit of a 'cheat' that they both spec Deore brakes on a 'XT' build. Deore has similar stopping power but I prefer the adjustments and much reduced weight of XT.

Re the Silverback bike, they always have better wheelsets as standard, I own 2 Meridas, one Ht and one Fs with standard wheelsets (both have Alex rims) and to upgrade to a better wheelset costs between R4000 - R5000.

A bad day cycling is better than a good day working.

I had the same choice to make 2 years ago. I went for the silverback because it was nearly 1kg less than the merida. My silverback had ztr crest though.the old meridas had fox forks.

The silverback wins with the reba.

Don't know if this will help. But i'm a merida fan and bought a 1000 lite. Was cheaper than the xt so the drivetrain is slx not xt, but the suspension is better (according to the hub experts) and the bike is lighter than the xt. Also has mavic rims on. Don't know if the 1000 is still on the market or cheaper, but that is my 2c...
