Cycling on the N14 highway

Howzit Hubbers,

*Rant on*

I happened to be driving along the N14 Highway yesterday when I saw groups of riders along the side of the highway.

I understand that from HP to Muldersdrift it is "safe" to ride on, but was shocked to see groups as high up as Bayers Naude and beyond!

What was more frightening was the size of the groups with what looked like real novices swerving out of the yellow lane on the climbs.

I grasp the fact that its silly season but hell that is a dangerous move!

*Rant off*

Have an awesome Monday all!

Why stress if they have a peanut sized brain or a death wish...

I have seen a few guys before between Malibongwe heading north towards the R511 Diepsloot offramp - why bother because they will continue to do it.

There is a road cycling group that ride from one of the security estates in Centurion. They always start and end their ride on the N14, and often do laps on the highway; using the offramps to turn around on

Stupidity and arrogance are not yet treatable by modern medicine.

We will continue to see similar acts in general and specifically in Gauteng in November and in the Cape in March in the buildup to the two big races.

The mind boggles

Which group is this?

Which group is this?

It's not a club/shop group. They alternate from Stone Ridge/Blue Hills. I know one of they guys, but he feels its safer than riding on normal roads with narrow/no shoulders

Sure, I actually understand the thinking, just wondering about the legality.

Concerned that we might have a M4 incident here... :(

Yes, its not good!

Most of them are fairly new to cycling, and not very stable on a road bike

Im also guilty as charged by riding on a highway. Where I stay its way saver to use, but I must add that i dont ride in groups and stick far left as possible.

its "silly season" and everyone with 2 wheels are out for last preparation. Our club often use the HP to Muldersdrift stretch mostly in the yellow line and back-up vehicle  . . .  and can confirm saw saturday early a large group (various kit)  "sprinting" past us only to continue on N14

Can't wait for the 94.7 to be done so that things can normalise to an extend; even if it is only for a couple of months 'till Argus fever starts

A couple of weeks ago, I rode on the N14 from Pinehaven and came off at Muldersdrift. They were doing roadworks from Pinehaven upto at least the Beyers off-ramp -  a nice coned off lane on the LH side.

I know that it's illegal to ride beyond the M'Drift ramp and out of interest, I looked for road signs to support this.....nada! Maybe they were removed due to the roadworks, but the next (blue) road sign I'm aware of is well up the N14, part way to the Beyers ramp.

Perhaps cyclists are assuming that they can ride onwards beyond Muldersdrift, and then see the blue road sign, in which case they're committed? Beyond Beyers.....is another story all together mind.
