and what would be about 400-500m total ascent, Id think.

From the farm to the top and back 50km.

Farm to Shebeen and back 60km.

Van Gaalens to the top and Back 100km.

ok, so if w choose this option,

not having been there before, whats the process/direction after parking and ready to ride? back to main road and then ?

G

Drive 200m past the dirt road that one cycles on to Breedts and turn left at a farm called Berlouri - drive stright up the hill, past a dam and straight through a gate into the farm and park under the trees.

Looking at the map, and distances and the way the road goes, this is the old farm, where we always parked, that had the restaurant also. ????

Have a look at the second link, you can download the GPX file. Total accent is about 1100m.

Van Gaalens to Hekpoort: 25km, +-80km ascent. Gravel road.

Hekpoort to top of Breedts: 25km, 450m ascent (250m of that in the last 5km)

We missed the right turn at 15.8km to stay on the district gravel road and used the tar R560 on the way in, not ideal with traffic.

Add 12km (6 down, 6 up + 350m climbing) if you go down to the cafe on the north side of breedts. He makes awesome fresh boerie rolls there, definitely recommend it.

Thanks, ye matching what David send.

We're actually cutting out the back section, leaving that for a next time. this side climb is only 250m after 20km... baby steps for the others, other side is 550m over 5km

Maybe see some guys out there on Sat.

thanks.

Apologies if this is a hi-jack, but you guys seem knowledgeable and I'm curious. Queries follow:

Are the routes (to the top return, and to the Shebeen return?) technical? eg would it be considered a gravel-grinding route on a cyclocross-type bike, for the average dirt roadie (yes, I know....)?

Are there any options to go beyond the top/shebeen and do a loop to return to the Hekpoort area, on tar if necessary?

Ta in advance?

I would be pretty scared going down either side on anything but a mountain bike - fast, sometimes lots of marbles in the corners, can be pretty rutted. other than that... No worries.

I did it up and over a few times last December with a single speed rigid and it was OK .....

Was there a couple of months ago, going down to the shebeen has some exposed sandstone banks with one or two step downs. All rideable with some confidence and an mtb.

I dont have and cx riding experience, so i cant really comment, but I for one will be fairly wary going down to the shebeen on a cx bike.

Ah yes, descending. How about the ride back down to Hekpoort from the top of the nek? Also a little dodge?

Nope, top of the nek back down aint that bad, line choice important, and keeping speed in check before the rough bits is all that's needed

jip jip - it's the other side down to shebeen that's a bit sketchy. Not sure I'd give it a go on a CX bike.

Haven't been out there since May, but am pretty sure that the recent rains also made it a bit more interesting.

Damn.... I need to go check it out now  :)

I have been up and over twice this year.

With the exception of two or three stretches totally about 300m it was no problem

Bombing down to the shebeen on a duallie - no problem.

I'll say it again: not so sure I will try it on a CX bike. You obviously have way bigger cajones than me  :w00t:
