Hi all, i currently ride a giant anthem x 3 with standard 3x drivetrain.. Considering going 1x with a rapide nw ring and a sunrace 11-42 cassette.. Is it a good idea to do the conversion and how does the sunrace products compare to shimano?

Been on my Sunrace / Rapide cassette for just on a year now, did the J2C and a few other smaller stage races with it, and wear is negligible. Did 2100km on it so far.

I do however keep my chain clean and properly lubed.

I bought a Sunrace 11-42 cassette and YBN chain combo about a year ago, I had no issues with it at all. Then a month ago I had to replace that chain, as it was worn badly. Now with a new KMC chain, the chain slips on the 42T sprocket when I climb steeps.

Do you think the 42T is done for? The chainline is as good as it can be, and I have checked all the limits and B-screw.

I just feel that 1 year lifespan is a bit disappointing. I have no idea how many kms I have on it, maybe around 1500kms.

There is your problem - a badly worn chain will prematurely damage your cassette. if you regularly check and change your chain, you should go through 3 or 4 chains for every cassette (riding condition dependent).

Aaah crap, I was thinking the same thing. I will then have to replace the cassette sometime, and check my chain more frequently.

Why is it only on the 42T sprocket? The 36T is also aluminium and it is still fine. It is now my bail-out gear. Hell it is tough without my 42.

pull the rear brake witht he chain on the 42 and pull on the crank a bit and watch the chain on the cassette if you can physically see the chain move up the cog is completely toast. most likely due to the worn chain.

Hey. You mentioned steep climbs- do you do a lot of steep climbs and use the 42t a lot?

No issues with mine after a couple of thousand km's initially thought it would be poor quality but it seems ok.. Only one small thing is the black coating seems to be coming off now but the teeth are good!

Hey scubes

Yeah well I use it every week when I ride, but I don't do many kms every week with the 42T. I did use it alot during last December at the Garden Route Trail Park. I think that is where most of the wear to my chain happened.
