What breaks your MTB?

What are the things we do that break and damage out bikes unnecessarily?

Example: 1

Riding with a dirty chain

Causes friction and damages chain, cassette and crank.

Fix: wash regularly and lube

Does it cause damage to do things like..

Hang bike upside down?

Wash bike upside down?

Wash bike with sunlight?

Bunny hop a curve half ass and hit the back wheel?

You get the idea of the post.

Post either a question, fix or both.

Mud.

Fix : don't ride in mud it messes up your drivetrain and you break the trails

Agree. 1 day of riding in mud and rain does more wear and tear than 10 days riding in dry conditions. Drivetrain, brakes, cables and suspension pivots all take strain.

Mud.

I hate mud with a passion. My mates know that i will go kilometres out of my way to avoid a muddy route. I had a very long 2006 when i did Barberton, Sani and Epic all in knee high mud. It destroys everything. 8 years later when my brother had my Epic bike and he stripped it there was still a lot of mud in the frame.

Destroys drivetrains, disc brake pads, pivots and everything else.

I HATE MUD.

very few things break bikes... some things just accelerate wear

wet sand and mud is probably the worst...  can't avoid it, however its key to wash your bike afterwards

some alu frames are subject to fatigue cracks on the welds that can be accelerated by large hits, jumps or generally heavy riding.  I won't change my riding style, i'd just change my frame or frame material.  i cracked 3 alu frames from a specific manufacturer and since went to carbon frame with no more issues

big hits can damage rims...  again, i won't change my riding style, i'd just get bigger tyres and make sure to maintain the correct pressure

key thing is to lube and to wash as often as you can, then go ride your bike for what it's made for!!

Washing the bike too often according to some people.

There is a post of the Santa Cruz forum where the factory mechanics say exactly this. Wash it properly every third of fourth week. Just hose it down in between. They reckon the seals etc last longer.

Using solvents (lets restart the Kleen Green versus Prepsol debate) I use Kleen Green. I have personally seen Prepsol remove paint. If you do use it be careful - especially on chains.

Cross chaining destroys chains and sprockets- shift early and lighter or just go 1 x (says he who is having 1 x 11 fitted at the moment).

Not changing chains early enough and consequently destroying sprockets that could last longer.

Running chains with too much lube

Running chains with no or too little lube

Lubes that build up on chains to create gunk.

Kind of everything you do in MTBing destroys your bike. Its like being on a Formula 1 team in terms of maintenance.

good mechanic will never run out of things to fix?

then i must be the best mechanic ever, cause there is always more wrong after I finish working on the bike.

Riding on the beach.... I will never ever ride on a beach ever again with my bike. That fine salty sand gets in everywhere and it is BAD for your hubs, BB and whole drive chain...

One of the reasons i will never do the Agulhas MTB again...

Mud. But not any mud... swampy black stinky mud.

Now THAT destroys a drivetrain, fork, shock, shoes, will to live...

Fix? Dunno. Perhaps route developers not taking the trails through swamps? I did a race at Hero (where that lunatic new owner had the Hippo killed. What happened there? That thread died off a slow death...) sometime ago. Damn, there was swamp hole after swamp hole. And it reeked...
