120mm Travel Fox 34 or RockShox Revelation?

Hi All

I ride a 2014 Spez Camber Comp with a few upgrades that Ive done over the past two years. The parts that I've changed is as follows. American Classic Wide Lighting wheel set, carbon handle bar, SLX brakes, XT 1x11 group set and a Reverb dropper post. The original fork that came with the bike is a Fox 32 CTD Evolution. It has that noodle effect over rough surfaces that the fork became famous for. To try and combat it I changed the CTD damper to the newer Fit 4 damper last year. It made a difference on how the fork kept the front wheel on the ground but it didn't change the lateral movement or spaghetti effect at all.

I've now had enough of this noodle effect and need to upgrade the fork. Id like to keep to the original 120 travel or possibly a 130 travel as I don't want to change the geometry of the bike too much. I was thinking of the Fox 34 120 travel ( I here they are pretty good forks lately) or the RockShox Revelation 120 for a 29'er. Was hoping for a Pike but as I understand it, the Pike only comes in a 140 to 160mm travel fork for a 29er.

Does anyone have any advise regarding the Fox or the RockShox or have experience with both, and why you think the one is better than the other. Im open to other fork suggestions that you might think off as well. I do mostly XC type riding in Johannesburg with a stage race like Berg & Bush and some trails in Grabouw and the Garden route once or twice a year.

Some advice will be appreciated

The longer  the better so why not a 150 with a 120 lockout - will only change geometry very slightly and usually for the better. Pike all the way.

Proper susp. setup can go a long way in improving da noodle.

If it were my money I'd go for a Pike 120mm, although I do currently have a Fox 34 with Fit4 damper on my bike which I am extremely happy with - it came as standard on my bike, so just dnt see the value in upgrading to Pike...

But since you can choose anything - go Pike.

I would steer clear from revelation, also has 32mm stanctions, so the noodle effect will also come into play, maybe less than your Fox 32, but it will still be there.

Its much better on the newer ones , my 2015 rev is at 140mm and the "noodle effect" is hardly noticeable.

One thing worth noting is not all forks have the same axle to crown length. A 130mm Pike may get you the same geometry and numbers as a 120mm 34 Fox due to a shorter A2C on the Pike.

But yes, Pike is available from 120mm in 29er.

I am a camber owner. 2016 model. It originally came with a 120mm Revelation. Due to an awesome special on CRC I purchased a 140mm Fox 34. I have consequently ordered a 120mm spring and am waiting for it.

My advice/remarks are:

The revelation is a great fork

The fox 34 is awesome

But i prefer the Pike.

IMO my bike rides better with 120mm front, I would classify myself as an agressive rider and thought a bump in travel would be beneficial. It ruined the bikes handling. Okay its better for very steep terrain. Thats it.

If i was you i wpuld buy a 120mm FOX 34 2017 performance. They are about R7000 new from the states. Pre-tax

I have an mrp stage on my one bike and revelation 130/120mm on the other bike. The MRP fork just feels more refined and smooth. The revelation wins in that anyone will be able to service the them. A major bonus on the 29er mrp stage is that you have ramp up control and have that "bottomless feel" in the rough stuff but maintain that initial plushness over the fine chatter. MRP all the way. Chat with trail tech. Delt with them end of last year and it's been a pleasure.

Thanks for all advise. Ive never ridden a Pike before but it seems that the Pike is the fork that all other forks gets measured against and has been there for some time now. I don't believe I need more than 120 to 130mm travel. Its not an all out trail bike but rather a good mix of XC and trail. Longer travel is going to damper the climbing abilities a bit I believe. Just some thought that Im having at moment.

Where would you suggest I start looking for prices? Should I buy local and support out industry even though I'll pay more or is it worth it buying online and saving a few bucks and take my chances with the grey import?

I have a 2016 Pike 150mm and Fox 34 Factory 140mm on somewhat similar bikes. I prefer the feel of the Fox at speed but both are really good.

For a Camber and at 120mm I'd buy the Fox 34 with Fit damper.

The Pike also comes in different damper version and again I would recommend the better RCT3 damper.
